SUMMARY:EOSC Symposium 2026
DESCRIPTION:The EOSC Symposium 2026 will demonstrate the unique value that EOSC brings to the Union’s research and innovation programme\, with the EOSC Federation taking centre stage. Launched at last year’s Symposium as “the backbone of Europe’s digital research and innovation ecosystem\,” the EOSC Federation is rapidly expanding and maturing into a new strategic asset for Europe’s research\, innovation\, and digital sovereignty agendas. This year’s event will mark its formal transition into operations.\n\n\nOrganised by the EOSC Association with the support of the EOSC Gravity project\, the EOSC Symposium 2026 will bring the EOSC community together in Florence on 14–16 October at the Palazzo dei Congressi. \nThis flagship event is the must-attend gathering for everyone driving the future of Europe’s research data ecosystem—from policymakers and funders to researchers\, infrastructure leaders\, data stewards\, and more. Over three days\, participants will connect\, share insights\, and celebrate the latest progress concerning EOSC and the EOSC Federation.

SUMMARY:RDA at AI in Science Summit 2026: Open Science and Data for AI Research
DESCRIPTION:The Research Data Alliance (RDA) will play a leading role at the AI in Science Summit 2026 (AIS26) in Dublin on 15–16 October 2026\, co-curating the Open Science and Data for AI Research strand alongside University College Dublin Library and the Big Data Value Association (BDVA). \nAIS26 is a flagship EU conference driving the implementation of the European Strategy on AI in Science. Coordinated by University College Dublin and Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland in association with Ireland’s EU Presidency Programme\, the Summit will bring together researchers\, research infrastructure providers\, policymakers\, industry and investors to explore how artificial intelligence can transform scientific discovery. \n\nOpen Science and Data for AI Research\n\nData quality\, interoperability and availability are fast becoming critical constraints on AI-driven research. For two decades\, the Open Science movement has advanced the case for research that is transparent\, reproducible and shared as a public good. AI introduces a new set of opportunities and challenges: it not only consumes research data and infrastructure at unprecedented scale\, but changes what is required of data curation\, governance\, access and stewardship. \nThe Open Science and Data for AI Research strand will examine these challenges across three interconnected sessions\, moving from the practical choices researchers face when preparing data for AI\, through the evolution of research data infrastructure\, to wider questions about who controls the data\, models and computing resources underpinning AI-driven science. \n\nProgramme\n\nThursday 15 October | 14:00–15:30\nPreparing Data for AI: Choices\, Trade-offs\, and Governance\nModerated by Hilary Hanahoe\, Secretary General\, Research Data Alliance \n\n\nExploring the practical governance\, stewardship\, sovereignty and technical choices involved in making research data ready for responsible use with AI. \n\n\nSpeakers: Diego Perino\, Barcelona Supercomputing Center; Filippo Vasone\, University of Bologna; Lidia Borrell-Damian\, Science Europe; Rodrigo Roa\, Data Observatory\, Chile; and Sean Hill\, Senscience / Frontiers. \n\n\nThursday 15 October | 16:00–17:30\nAdapting Data Infrastructure for AI: Sovereignty\, Governance\, and Architectural Choices\nModerated by Sandra Collins\, University Librarian\, UCD Library \n\n\nExamining how research infrastructures are responding to AI-scale requirements and the implications of architectural choices for data sovereignty\, governance\, access and research communities. \n\n\nSpeakers: Lisa Griffith\, Digital Repository of Ireland; Tobias Weigel\, Hereon / Helmholtz; Natalie Harrower\, Canadian Research Data Centre Network; and Gergely Sipos\, EGI Foundation. \n\n\nFriday 16 October | 09:00–10:30\nData\, Models and Power: Who Controls the Inputs to AI-Driven Science?\nModerated by Edward Curry\, University of Galway and Vice-President\, BDVA \n\n\nLooking beyond infrastructure to the wider questions of access and control: who controls the compute\, research and platform data\, models and knowledge resources that AI-driven science depends upon\, and on what terms can research communities access them? \n\n\nSpeakers: Kimmo Koski\, CSC – IT Center for Science / LUMI AI Factory; Ali Knott\, Social Data Science Alliance; Nuria de Lama\, BDVA; Angel Alonso\, European Alliance for Research Excellence; and Laure Le Bars\, SAP Research & Innovation. \n\n\nThe strand concludes with the AIS26 Plenary Session on Strand Outputs on Friday 16 October\, 11:00–11:50\, where Hilary Hanahoe will present key issues\, opportunities and recommendations emerging from the Open Science and Data discussions. \n\n\nLocation: UCD O’Connor Centre for Learning\, Ground Floor (L0)\, Room L0.04\, University College Dublin.

SUMMARY:European Commission consultation on the Horizon Europe 2028-2032 European Partnership portfolio
DESCRIPTION:What is the consultation?\nThe European Commission opened a public consultation on 10 July 2026\, titled: Single Basic Act for Joint Undertakings and thematic priorities for the European Partnership portfolio in Horizon Europe 2028–2034. Although the title refers to Joint Undertakings\, Section 2 of the questionnaire concerns the thematic priorities and overall design of the future European Partnership portfolio\, and is directly relevant to the future of EOSC. The consultation will close on 16 October 2026. \nWhy this is important for EOSC\nAs you know\, EOSC-A’s primary position is that EOSC should continue under Horizon Europe 2028–2034 (also known as the EU’s 10th Framework Programme for Research and Innovation\, or FP10) as a distinct Work Programme-based European Partnership. The consultation provides an important opportunity for the EOSC-A membership and the wider EOSC community to make the case — as either an individual\, on behalf of an organisation\, or both — for research data\, digital infrastructures\, and European-scale research excellence to be recognised as strategic thematic priorities for the future Partnership portfolio\, and for EOSC to be the distinct Work Programme-based Partnership through which this cross-cutting European capability is further developed and sustained. \nWhat EOSC-A is asking you to do\nEOSC-A encourages its membership and other EOSC stakeholders to complete the consultation\, with particular attention paid to Section 2 (“Questions on the Horizon Europe 2028–2034 partnerships portfolio”). One may complete the consultation on behalf of their organisation (if authorised to do so)\, as an individual\, or both separately. \nTo make participation as straightforward as possible\, EOSC-A has prepared recommended responses to the open-text questions in this section. These texts reflect the Association’s previously agreed\, consensus-based positions\, including support for EOSC as a distinct Work Programme-based European Partnership under Horizon Europe 2028–2034. \nWe invite you to use the proposed responses\, which are previewed below\, by copying and pasting them into the corresponding open text field boxes of Questions 1\, 2\, 3\, and 4 of Section 2 of the consultation. In the case of Question 1\, please select the “Other” category to insert the accompanying text. Questions 2.1\, 3.1\, and 4.1 are not strictly relevant to this initiative\, and should be answered on your own account or indicated as “not applicable”.
