SUMMARY:ERCIM News No. 144
DESCRIPTION:The Special Theme and the Research and Innovation sections contain articles presenting a panorama of European research activities. The Special Theme focuses on a sector that has been selected by the editors from a short list of currently “hot” topics whereas the Research and Innovation section contains articles describing scientific activities\, research results\, and technical transfer endeavours in any sector of Information and Communication Science and Technology (ICST)\, telecommunications or applied mathematics. Submissions to the Special Theme section are subjected to an external review process coordinated by invited guest editors whereas submissions to the Research and Innovation section are checked and approved by the ERCIM News editorial board. \nSpecial Theme:  Open Science Experiences and Prospects\nGuest editors:  \n\nLeonardo Candela\, CNR-ISTI\nRoberto di Cosmo\, Inria and University Paris Cité\n\nOpen Science is the practice of science in which researchers collaborate openly and citizens contribute to research questions. In this approach\, research artefacts\, research processes\, and even laboratories are shared under conditions that enable reuse\, transparency\, and reproducibility as early and openly as possible. The European Commission has made Open Science a policy priority. \nThis special theme aims to highlight current technological developments in Open Science and to present future prospects for infrastructures\, tools\, and services that support open\, transparent\, and reusable research practices. \nTopics include but are not limited to: \n\nAI and Open Science\nApproaches for effective sharing and reuse of research artefacts\nCitizen science platforms\, methods and impact\nEthical\, legal and trust aspects of Open Science (e.g. GDPR\, IP\, sensitive data)\nInfrastructures promoting Open Science\nInteroperability\, standards\, and sustainability of Open Science ecosystems\nMethods and tools for science reproducibility and transparency\nOpen research software\, open-source practices\, and research software sustainability\nOpen science-friendly scholarly communication\nOpen science-oriented research data management and FAIR data principles\nOpen Science and Research Security\nScience gateways\, virtual research environments for Open Science\nServices for Open Science education and skills development\nSocio-economic and geopolitical dimensions of Open Science\nSolutions for Open Science monitoring and innovative research assessment.\n\n  \n\nAll articles have to be sent to the local editor for your country (see About ERCIM News) or to the central editor en-submission@ercim.eu \nReviewing:\nArticles submitted to the special theme and the research and society sections are subject to a review process.

SUMMARY:Call for papers - Special Issue of HEP on Open Science
DESCRIPTION:Disputed openness: universities\, epistemic inequality and market forces in open science in the era of artificial intelligence\n\nThis Higher Education Policy (HEP) special issue invites scholarly contributions that critically examine the promises and contradictions of open science. ‘Contributions should critically engage with the ways in which financial interests\, policy frameworks\, geopolitical asymmetries\, and disciplinary hierarchies shape current models of openness. We are particularly interested in analyses of the policy and governance dimensions that influence how universities interpret and implement open science agendas. This includes examining institutional\, regulatory or structural constraints preventing higher education institutions from engaging openly with societal stakeholders or fostering dialogue with alternative knowledge systems\, particularly when such engagement challenges dominant epistemologies\, disciplinary boundaries or funding models. \nThe full Call for Papers can be accessed here: https://www.iau-aiu.net/IMG/pdf/special_issue_proposal_11_july_2025_.pdf \nTimeline:\nDeadline for submission of abstracts: 20 October 2025\nNotification of abstract acceptance: 5 December 2025\nFull manuscripts due: 30 June 2026\nFirst peer review period: July-September 2026\nRevised papers due: 1 December 2026\nSecond peer review period: December 2026 – January 2027\nExpected publication date: April-May 2027 \nFor any questions\, please contact: \nCarolina Guzmán-Valenzuela: carolina.guzman@uab.cat or Trine Jensen: t.jensen@iau-aiu.net

SUMMARY:EGI Access Call
DESCRIPTION:The Offer\nA Collaborative Path to the Digital Era\n\nSelected applications will be granted sponsored access and use of EGI services and resources. EGI offers compute and storage resources\, compute platform services\, data management services\, and related user support and training through this call. The resources and services offered via this grant are sponsored by various national funding agencies and are free to access for the use cases selected through the call. Please note that we cannot provide access to specific data sets through this Call. \nSelection and Results\n\nEGI supports the integration of new scientific use case applications in the EGI Federated Infrastructure under the following new conditions: \n\nProposals for scientific use cases will go through a review by independent experts from the EGI Federation. As part of this review\, the main objectives\, the overall level of maturity and feasibility of the use case will be evaluated. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the evaluation within three weeks from the submission date.\nIf the outcome is positive\, EGI will run a match-making process aiming to identify the most suitable service providers and allocate the required resources. These resources can be national or international\, depending on the coverage of the request and its expected impact.\nExperts from EGI will monitor the integration plans of the use case regularly\, providing assistance and support to address technical issues and disseminate outstanding results.\n\nTimeline\n\nSubmissions of scientific use cases can be made at any time. \nTypically\, evaluations and notifications are expected within one month from the submission. However\, please be aware that this timeline may vary depending on the specific circumstances of your application.

SUMMARY:2nd open call for Route 1 expert (non-financial) support (OPEN)
DESCRIPTION:Support programme for repositories and data service providers\nThe FAIR Principles focus on characteristics of digital objects that make them Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable and Reusable. Achieving and maintaining those characteristics depends on the individuals and organisations that create\, store\, curate\, and preserve the objects. These activities are ‘FAIR-enabling’\, and repositories and data service providers play an important role in facilitating them. \nFAIR-IMPACT is here to help repositories and data service providers  assess your current FAIR-enabling capabilities and develop action plans to improve them. We will introduce you to services and tools that address a wide range of topics\, such as: \n\nRepository policy\, e.g. ACME-FAIR\, Data support policy for photon and neutron science;\nMaking objects in the repository more FAIR\, e.g. CESSDA Data Archiving Guide\, FAIR Cookbook;\nAutomated FAIR assessment\, e.g. F-UJI\, Framework for assessing FAIR services;\nRepository certification\, e.g. CoreTrustSeal+FAIRenabling Capability Maturity Model\, FAIRsFAIR repository support.\n\nWe go beyond the formal FAIR principles and also include guidance for effective strategies to engage with your community and position your organisation in the research landscape. In other words\, we are here to make your organisation more successful.
