SUMMARY:International Open Access Week
DESCRIPTION:This year’s theme asks a pointed question about the present moment and how\, in a time of disruption\, communities can reassert control over the knowledge they produce. It also challenges us to reflect on not only who has access to education and research but on how knowledge is created and shared\, where it has come from\, and whose voices are recognized and valued.

SUMMARY:The 4th United Nations Open Science and Open Scholarship Conference
DESCRIPTION:From 16 to 18 October 2025\, the 4th United Nations Open Science and Open Scholarship Conference will convene policymakers\, IGO representatives\, researchers\, scholars\, librarians\, publishers\, and civil society\, both online and in person at the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo\, Japan. \nThe Conference will serve as an urgent call to accelerate transformations in science and scholarship in alignment with the Pact for the Future\, to map progress in national and international efforts towards opening the record of science\, and to inspire collaborative actions and coalitions to expedite progress ensuring no country\, community\, or individual is left behind. \nIn September 2024\, at the Summit of the Future\, all 193 Member States of the United Nations adopted the action-oriented Pact for the Future. The Pact underscores that science is instrumental for the three pillars of the United Nations – sustainable development\, peace and security\, and human rights. Recognizing the potential for science to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, the Pact supports policies toward open science and open innovation to help bridge science gaps especially in developing countries. \nDespite these significant commitments\, billions of people – especially in developing countries – still lack meaningful access to participate in and benefit from critical scientific knowledge\, research infrastructure\, and emerging technologies. Open science and open scholarship provide a transformative pathway to reverse these trends\, fostering multilateral cooperation\, responsible innovation\, and the equitable dissemination of knowledge. As stated in the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science\, we must ensure “reciprocal access to science for all producers and consumers of knowledge regardless of their location\, nationality\, race\, age\, gender\, income\, socio-economic circumstance\, career stage\, discipline\, language\, religion\, disability\, ethnicity\, migratory status or any other grounds”. More:

SUMMARY:International Love Data Week
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 theme is “Whose Data Is It\, Anyway?” Take a minute to think about who owns data compared to who uses data. Different groups – like researchers\, the government\, companies\, or organizations – may collect data. They could own it\, share it\, publish it online\, or combine it. This year’s Love Data Week wants us to ask ‘Whose Data is it Anyway?’ This helps us remember to think about where the data came from before using it. Use this theme to have fun with your audience using data games or game shows. You could also use it to help people learn more about data literacy. Or you could talk about being responsible when dealing with important issues involving data. We’ve created a ready-to-use social media post. Simply download (or right-click) the square image and use it along with the text below to share this year’s event with your community on any social media platform. \nSave the date! SUMMARY:ELIXIR All Hands 2024
DESCRIPTION:Workshops must be inclusive and consider diversity in all aspects\, including speakers\, hosts and participants\, especially regarding balanced gender representation. Please encourage contributions from everyone using different techniques\, such as small group discussions or platforms that allow anonymous participation\, such as Sli.do. Most negative feedback from previous workshops often relates to a lack of dynamic engagement\, i.e. too many back-to-back slide presentations. \nWorkshops will run as hybrid events\, so efforts should be made to include remote attendees to a similar level as those in the room.

SUMMARY:e-IRG Workshop under BE EU Presidency
DESCRIPTION:The e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG) organises two open workshops every year\, each under the auspices of the corresponding presidency of the EU Council. The Belgian EU Presidency e-IRG Workshop will be organised as a hybrid event and will bring together e-IRG stakeholders in Brussels\, Belgium\, as well as online and worldwide. The e-IRG events are official EU presidency events which will take place in the framework of the “Conference on Research Infrastructures” and the “ESFRI Forum meeting”\, similar to the Lund events under the Swedish EU presidency. \nThe overarching theme of the event will be “Sustainable e-Infrastructures for research results valorisation“\, in line with BE EU presidency topic. There will be two sessions under the Belgian e-IRG workshop: \nDay 1 – Wednesday 5 June 2024\, 13:30-15:30\nSession 1: Sustaining the role of e-Infrastructures in EOSC and beyond\nThis session aims to continue the discussions from the Valencia e-IRG Workshop and reflect on the draft RI orientation paper for WP 2025-2027 which includes the topic of sustainability of RIs\, and refers to the federation and uptake of e-Infrastructures. The session will also touch upon the concept of federation and role of e-Infrastructures in the new EOSC node-based ecosystem\, especially as e-Infrastructures are not formally part of the nodes ecosystem nor the procurement projects. The sustainability topic of RIs and e-Infrastructures is also relevant to the new ERA policy agenda for 2025-2027. \nDay 1 – Wednesday 5 June 2024\, 16:00-18:00\nSession 2: The e-Infrastructure contribution to data and research outputs valorisation\nOn of the Belgian EU Presidency topics on Research and Innovation is improving the valorisation of research results. This is key for reducing the innovation gap\, and tailoring academic research with the needs of society\, policy-makers and industries\, while stimulating the EU’s industrial recovery and revitalisation. The aim of the session is to highlight the crucial role of e-Inrastructures in this area\, spanning several layers and components\, with a cross-cuting one being the EOSC and thematic (domain-specific) or generic (domain-agnostic) data infrastructures.

SUMMARY:Research Infrastructures in a Changing Global\, Environmental and Socio-economical Context
DESCRIPTION:The “Research Infrastructures in a Changing Global\, Environmental and Socio-economical Context” conference organised in the frame of the Belgian Presidency of the European Council\, will take place on June 4th and June 5th 2024\, in Brussels\, at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR). \nThe conference will focus on 3 main issues: \n\nResearch Infrastructures (RIs) as key players of strategic autonomy in a changing global context;\nthe socio-economic and environmental impact of RIs;\nthe broad ecosystems of RIs.\n\nResearch infrastructures are increasingly faced with a changing global context\, facing a volatile and unstable geopolitical situation on the global scene\, new and rapidly changing political priorities (open strategic autonomy\, digital and environmental transition\, mission-oriented policies…). This requires flexibility\, capacity to adapt and resilience. RI’s are already confronted with the scarcity of some crucial raw material and disruption in the supply chain. The conference will explore the value of RIs to open strategic autonomy\, their contributions to key political objectives like the Green Deal and look at the broad ecosystem\, the relation with national/regional RIs and other initiatives and instruments. \nThe conference room can accommodate up to 220 participants. You will receive a confirmation of your registration a few days after you sent your request. \nThe conference will be livestreamed\, and the recording will be available on the website.
