SUMMARY:Community of Practice on Open Science and Responsible Research Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Next online event coming up on\n\nMore traditional\, publication-driven assessments of research(ers) are running out of steam. Multiple initiatives are promoting responsible assessments of research and researchers. Simultaneously\, a movement that incentivises open scientific practices is developing and gaining footing on European and national levels. These two movements have a unique opportunity to strengthen and reinforce one another. Research assessment reform can provide a big boost to the adoption of Open Science\, and the transparency offered by Open Science can serve as a key enabler for assessment reform. \nIn bimonthly sessions\, facilitated by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University (NL)\, we ask: How can research assessment consider Open Science and vice versa? What does Open Science translate to in research practice? \n\n\n\n12 March 2025\, 10:00-11:30 CET\n\n\nExploring the role of context in Responsible Research Assessment\nThis Community of Practice (CoP) session is inspired by the diverse research assessment approaches observed across the nine GraspOS pilots. Initially\, we classified these pilots by type to facilitate mutual learning. However\, we soon realised that the classifications offered little practical value. In this session\, a diverse panel of stakeholders will explore the significance of context in assessment reform and its broader implications. The discussion will be structured by the recent call for assessment reform that is ‘as aligned as possible\, but as diverse as necessary’. (Stroobants\, et al.\, 2024) \nPresenters:\nClifford Tatum\, chair (CWTS / GraspOS)\nLaura Himanen (CSC / GraspOS) \nPanelists:\nKaren Stroobants (CoARA)\nGareth O’Neill (Technopolis Group / OPUS)\nJames Morris (Science Europe)\nSarah de Rijcke (Leiden University)

SUMMARY:Austrian Micro Data Center in der Praxis

SUMMARY:Open FDO Workshop: The EPOS Research Infrastructure – Practical Challenges in Creating an Integrated Dataspace
DESCRIPTION:The FDO Forum is happy that Daniele Bailo and Jan Michalák from the EPOS ERIC Research Infrastructure will share their experiences in building a European wide infrastructure that amongst others is working on creating an integrated dataspace for researchers in the field of solid earth science and discuss with us about future perspectives of data infrastructure development. \nMotivation\nThe FDO Forum (FDOF) has as the major topic to develop the FDO specifications and foster their implementation to help enabling the creation of a unified and joint dataspace which should facilitate data sharing and reuse to the benefits of the researchers. Taking a naïve viewpoint\, one would assume that for people responsible for the building of “research or data infrastructures (RDI)” FDOs would immediately be welcomed as the standard that would solve all integration problems. Of course\, this is not the case. Not surprisingly\, the many technological challenges that need to be overcome to stepwise improve data accessibility and reuse bind much person power and require long-term agendas\, so that the responsible persons are very careful in jumping on new “technology waves”. Architecture designs which account for the FDO and that are enough general and abstract to allow the RDI implementation in different scenarios\, are required. This endeavour has been pursued in research infrastructures such as EPOS\, which are highly distributed\, with many partners all over Europe and beyond\, all of them having their individual technology stack\, policies and processes\, requiring a lot of synchronisation effort to make new steps. In addition\, the available funds for RDI and thus the availability of technological experts are limited. \nEPOS is an excellent example to understand the challenges in improving data sharing and reuse in detail. Therefore\, this workshop is a very good opportunity to understand the practical challenges and the architectural approach in research infrastructure building and the achieved results in detail on the one hand\, and discuss possible future developments on the other hand.

SUMMARY:Promoting Open Science at Universities
DESCRIPTION:Insights from the Arqus Open Science Ambassador Network\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDienstag\, 29.04.2025\, 12:30-13:15\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDipl.-Ing. Dr. Hildrun Walter\n\nOpen Science – just the next buzz word or a remarkable development? Open Science (OS) seems to pop up here and there\, often in embellished contexts that suggest a tendency towards arbitrariness. However\, if one looks at the development of the policies of funding agencies\, e.g.\, for the framework programs of the European Commission\, the increase in mandatory deliverables assigned to OS shows a certain relevance of the movement. As a member of the Arqus European University Alliance\, the University of Graz is committed to promoting OS and to coordinating efforts to improve openness within and outside the Alliance. The Arqus Open Science Ambassador Network is dedicated to sharing best practices\, supporting students and researchers in OS practice and leveraging synergies between member universities to advocate for OS. The point is not to fall into ideology\, but to become aware of opportunities and risks by critically reflecting on areas of tension. \nHildrun Walter is researcher in science communication at the University of Graz since 2019. Her research focuses on the evaluation of science communication strategies and formats. She is interested in how open science practices and participatory approaches in research can influence the societal perception of science.

SUMMARY:Science as a Shared Journey: Engaging Communities\, Building Trust\, and Advancing Open Science for the SDGs
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Dag Hammarskjöld Library in the Department of Global Communications would like to invite you to a virtual panel discussion: “Science as a Shared Journey: Engaging Communities\, Building Trust\, and Advancing Open Science for the SDGs\,” scheduled for Wednesday\, 7 May\, 2025\, 8:30 – 9:45 a.m. (ET).  This virtual event is a side event to the 10th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science\, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals. \nRegister Now \nThe right to participate in and benefit from science remains fundamental to human progress and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Open Science is collaborative and inclusive\, allows new social actors to engage in scientific processes\, contributes to the democratization of knowledge\, upholds scientific integrity\, and addresses systemic inequalities and enclosures of knowledge. Open Science\, with its focus on participatory methods and citizen science initiatives\, is integral to supporting SDG localization. Through examples like community-led environmental monitoring and crowd-sourced health data collection\, citizen science\, an integral component of Open Science\, has demonstrated the power of inclusive knowledge creation. Science cannot function as a public good if the public cannot engage with it. \nBuilding momentum toward the 4th Open Science and Open Scholarship Conference\, this side event will convene diverse stakeholders – researchers\, librarians\, publishers and citizen science initiatives – to discuss the mechanisms through which public contributions and permanent access to scientific discoveries and innovations can strengthen public trust in scientific and knowledge organizations. This dialogue aims to produce actionable recommendations for scientific institutions to meaningfully engage diverse publics in knowledge creation and validation processes. \nSpeakers include: \nOpening remarks by Mr. Maher Nasser\, Department of Global Communications \nDr. Shalini Dhyani\, CSIR-National Environment Engineering Research Institute \nMr. Thomas Kaarsted\, University Library of Southern Denmark \nMs. Heather Page\, United Nations Statistics Division \nDr.
Was bedeutet „PDF/UA-Konformität“ und „WCAG-Konformität“?

SUMMARY:Open Science Framework (OSF)
DESCRIPTION:Dr.rer.nat. SUMMARY:Open Source Software and Open Science: A productive pair
DESCRIPTION:The ZBW Coffee Lecture on Open Science Education is a series of online presentations that showcase examples how to weave the principles\, methods\, and tools of Open Science into university education. Our Coffee Lectures are tailored specifically for those in the fields of economics and management\, though we welcome contributions neighboring disciplines. \nTuesday 24 June 2025 5pm – 6pm \nOpen Source Software and Open Science: A productive pair\nOpen Source Software (OSS) and Open Science are built on the same ideas and borrow heavily from the same philosophical and practical traditions. In practice\, I would go as far as arguing that open science involving computations requires an open software stack. However\, while OSS has become the backbone of much of the world’s scientific and web infrastructure\, adoption in economics has been fairly slow. This is especially true when compared to some fields that have seen rapid progress in recent years\, such as machine learning. I will discuss some reasons for this\, and how we may be able to accelerate the trend. The lecture will include many practical examples\, which draw on own research\, on the course materials of Effective Programming Practices for Economists\, and on the OSS projects pylcm and GETTSIM. \n\nSpeaker:  Hans-Martin von Gaudecker is a Professor of Applied Microeconomics in the Department of Economics of the University of Bonn.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Generative KI: Urheberrecht und Creative Commons (Andrea Schlotfeldt\, 18.07.2025\, online)

SUMMARY:FSCI 2025
DESCRIPTION:Working towards Open Scholarship in the Age of Intelligent Automation \nFeaturing virtual courses taught online\nWe are pleased to announce the FORCE11 Scholarly Communication Institute (FSCI) of 2025\, which will be held: Monday\, July 21st through Friday July 25th Working towards Open Scholarship in the Age of Intelligent Automation is the FSCI 2025 theme. FSCI organizers have sought and found course submissions contributing to and exploring this theme\, though all ideas in scholarly communication were welcome for consideration. The theme has also shaped the institute’s plenary events. \nSo take a look at our FSCI 2025 Courses & Abstracts\, select a course or two – and then Register Today!\nIn a world where AI plays a role in an increasing amount of our workflows\, we all work to increasing draw the academic publishing community towards a world of Open Scholarship\, in various ways and at differing levels. FSCI is a platform for professionals in the field to educate your colleagues about an aspect of this important work. FSCI courses often focus on one particular aspect of this work and provide practical training\, while paying attention to the broader issues at play. Other FSCI courses look more squarely at theoretical problems and explore new solutions. We hope to focus on these components as we present a variety of courses on topics across the scholarly communication ecosphere. Further\, please help us get the word out to your colleagues in research and scholarly communication by sharing this information with your network. As always\, thanks for your assistance in helping FSCI to develop and grow. \nConsider applying for a scholarship for FSCI 2025\nFSCI is the production of a wide array of volunteers; all of the instructors and most involved in planning contribute their time and effort and help us keep the tuition fees for FSCI low. However\, we know that for some in our community of scholars\, even our modest tuition fees are a barrier to participation. To allow full participation by the global FSCI community\, we have set aside a minimum of 100 complementary seats for the most qualified scholarship applicants.  The scholarships will be available to all applicants who participate in Scholarly Communication\, with preference given to both those who demonstrate active support for Open Scholarship in their communities of practice\, and to those interested scholars from the Global South(s). Please fill out this form to apply for a scholarship. Applications will be due by June 20. Decisions will be made by a panel of FSCI volunteers\, and applicants will be notified of their application status as soon as the week of June 16. If you intend to apply\, please do not register for FSCI until you are notified of the status of your scholarship application. If you are awarded a scholarship\, you will receive a discount registration code to apply at checkout.

SUMMARY:9th Open Science Retreat: 23-24 September 2025 – apply now! “Diamond OA: Utopian Dream or the Only Fair Future?”
DESCRIPTION:We cordially invite you to the 9th Open Science Retreat – this time with a focus on Diamond Open Access.\nDiamond Open Access has gained increasing attention in recent years as a community-led\, equitable model for scholarly publishing that aligns closely with the principles of Open Science. But is Diamond Open Access the long-awaited solution for equitable scholarly publishing – or merely an idealistic vision? This retreat critically explores the promises and limitations of Diamond OA\, its role in advancing Open Science\, and the role of the scientific community in the success of the model. A view on financing models and a spotlight on successful Diamond OA initiatives will provide practical insights into key success factors and persistent challenges. \nTo guide our discussions\, we propose the following questions: \n\nWhat can the contribution of Diamond OA be to addressing current challenges in scholarly publishing and where does its potential end?\nWhat are effective strategies\, recommendations\, best practices or lessons-learnt to applying AI in a responsible manner for upholding the Open Science principles?\nWhat policy and infrastructure conditions are necessary to ensure Diamond OA can flourish?\n\n  \nJoin us for a critical examination of whether Diamond OA is an innovative model or simply the next battleground in the future of publishing. We are looking forward to an exciting retreat – be part of it!
