SUMMARY:Teaching Reproducibility for Professional Development and Intellectual Growth
DESCRIPTION:We would like to cordially invite you to another Open Science Education Coffee Lecture. This time\, the focus will be on how reproducibility can be taught in economics and what significance it holds for research\, professional qualifications and career development. \nTeaching Reproducibility for Professional Development and Intellectual Growth \n23 April 2026 | 15:00 – 16:00 CEST \nOnline | in English \nOrganised by: ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics \n  \nReproducibility has long been more than just a methodological detail. It plays an increasingly important role in the quality of academic work and in how research is taught and learned today. But how can this topic be effectively conveyed in teaching? \nIn this Open Science Education Coffee Lecture\, Richard Ball\, Professor of Economics at Haverford College (USA)\, will provide insights into the work of Project TIER\, which he has helped shape for many years. As a member of the Executive Committee\, he is one of the individuals who help shape the project’s content and strategy. His talk is therefore not only an introduction to the approaches of Project TIER\, but also an opportunity to explore the development of reproducible research from a perspective that closely integrates teaching and research. \nRichard Ball will demonstrate how transparency and reproducibility have been systematically integrated into the teaching of quantitative methods in the economic and social sciences since 2013. This involves specific teaching approaches\, methodological and professional skills\, and the question of how the standards of scientific research have changed in recent years – for example\, through data and code policies and the establishment of replication archives.

SUMMARY:10th Open Science Retreat
DESCRIPTION:With the Open Science Retreat (OSR) the ZBW brings together international Open Science supporters from different stakeholder groups. Again\, we are planning two sessions where we will dive deeply into the topics that are of burning interest to us all. \nWe cordially invite you to join our 10thOpen Science Retreat that will be held virtually on 6 & 7 May 2026\, 15:00-17:00 CEST. \nIt is dedicated to the theme “The future of Open Science amid authoritarianism\, geopolitical tensions and aspirations for data sovereignty”. \n  \nFundamental scientific principles and findings are under unprecedented attack: Disinformation and science scepticism has reached new levels\, threatening the very foundations of democracy and science. Autocratic governments are attempting to restrict academic freedom and to use science and research to legitimise their very own political narratives and agendas. At the same time\, geopolitical tensions are deepening\, leading to increased security concerns in science and research\, potentially leading to less openness\, collaboration and communication among researchers around the globe. Last but not least\, these developments are also having a significant impact on the availability of research infrastructures and Open Science materials. Do our societies need more data sovereignty to meet these challenges? \n  \nTo guide our discussions\, we would like to address the following questions: \n\nHow can Open Science – with its emphasis on transparency\, collaboration\, equality of opportunities and reproducibility of scientific results – be sustained in the light of these global developments?\nWhat measures can we\, as an international community of Open Science practitioners\, take to ensure that Open Science is firmly established as the default mode of doing science in an increasingly challenging environment?\nIn particular\, how can we meet the challenges in areas like \n\nendangered data\, surveys and other Open Science materials?\nendangered research infrastructures for science and research?\n\n\nCan greater data sovereignty help us overcome some of the challenges we face in Open Science\, or are there other approaches that might be more promising?\n\n  \nDon’t miss out on this opportunity and apply now for free for this unique networking event: openscienceretreat.zbw.eu\nDeadline for application: 23 April 2026 \nThe Open Science Retreat is an interactive event. Participants are expected to commit to active contribution during the entire retreat. The number of participants is limited (random election\, however\, balanced with regard to geographical distribution and diversity aspects). \n  \nWe are looking forward to an exciting #OpenScienceRetreat – be part of it!

SUMMARY:Are We Measuring Open Science the Right Way?
DESCRIPTION:This webinar explores how Open Science indicators can be used responsibly to support evidence-based policy\, monitoring\, and research assessment reform. As indicators increasingly shape how progress in Open Science is measured and communicated\, they also influence incentives across the research system. \nThe session brings together European initiatives working on Open Science monitoring\, responsible metrics\, and impact assessment to reflect on the opportunities\, risks\, and guiding principles for the use of indicators in policy and practice. \nThe discussion aims to recognise that indicators do more than describe reality – they can shape incentives\, influence behaviour\, and affect policy and funding decisions. The session will create a space for dialogue between monitoring initiatives\, research assessment reform efforts\, and policy actors working to ensure the responsible use of indicators in the European research landscape. \nTARGET AUDIENCE \n\nPolicy makers and national ministries\nResearch funders and funding agencies\nEOSC governance actors and Steering Board members\nOpen science initiative leads at national and European level\nResearch assessment reform communities (e.g. CoARA members)\nMonitoring and evaluation experts in the European research landscape

The course targets organizations preparing\, or are in the start-up phase to build Nodes and EOSC community members seeking deeper understanding of Federation processes. \n\n\n\n\nSpecific goals of the course: \n\nExplain what readers of the Handbook can expect to learn from the Handbook.\nClarify what can and cannot be found in the Handbook.\nPresent how the Handbook requirements were applied by specific Nodes.\nLearn how to Apply the building of a Node and join the Federation.\nConvey the idea of the Handbook as a community effort (led and carried out by the community)\, that it is in continuous evolution\, and that feedback is welcome and desired (stressing the channels to do that would be good)\n\nThe course targets the beneficiaries of the Gravity Preparatory and Interproject Calls who are preparing to build a Node as well as organisations and experts within the EOSC community who wish to deepen their understanding of the Federation and the processes supporting its development. \nTo ensure the course is as interactive as possible the strategy is to use a “flipped classroom” approach. The goal is to encourage the audience to engage with the EOSC Federation Handbook (aka Handbook) before the session\, so the online sessions can focus on high-level explanation and answering their specific questions. \nBy the end of this course\, the learner will:\n\n\nHave detailed knowledge of the Handbook:\nUnderstand the significance of the Handbook;\nBe able to reflect on how to apply it to their own needs;\nBe able to formulate and answer questions on the process of becoming a node.
