SUMMARY:Why OpenREL? The Future of Machine-Readable Licensing in EOSC
DESCRIPTION:Quality research data output management and the FAIR principles emphasise the provision of licences\, clear access conditions or limitations\, and applicable policies for purposes of reuse. Machine-readability of such policies\, access conditions\, and licences is becoming more and more important as automation of research workflows and AI agent-driven processes gather pace. \nThe current landscape of standards and resources have specific shortcomings in respect of typical use cases (automated licence guidance\, detection of applicable licences and policies\, machine execution of policy\, licence and access provisions\, matching appropriate licences and policies to content\, and synthesis of custom policies and licences when required). Moreover\, existing licence formulations focus almost exclusively on creator rights (intellectual property) and do not allow formulation of limitations and duties in respect of subject rights protection. \nThe OpenREL (Open Rights Encoding Language) extends existing standards (such as ODRL) and associated resources (ccREL\, SPDX\, DPV\, DALICC\, DUO\, and IDSC) to provide a comprehensive vocabulary for encoding of policies\, licences\, access rules and process rules\, and provides exemplar services in support of the use cases described earlier. It also provides API-based access to policy and licence encodings\, and example or reference UI applications to assist with adoption and implementation. \nSpeakers: \n\nWim Hugo (DANS)\nProdromos Tsiavos (OpenAIRE)\nMelios Katsamakis (OpenAIRE)

SUMMARY:Replication Games: Advancing Reproducibility with Open and Restricted Access Data
DESCRIPTION:Reproducibility is often taught as a set of principles: share data\, document code\, pre-specify analyses\, and make results transparent. Replication Games turn these principles into practice. In these hackathon-style events\, researchers work in small teams to reproduce and stress-test published studies\, learning not only whether results can be recreated\, but also how empirical claims depend on documentation\, coding choices\, and analytical judgment. At the Institute for Replication\, these events have become a scalable model for combining training\, community-building\, and cumulative science: teams develop practical skills while contributing structured evidence on the reproducibility and robustness of the literature. In this talk\, I will discuss Replication Games as both pedagogy and research infrastructure. I will also reflect on our recent CBS Replication Games in the Netherlands\, where researchers attempted reproductions using restricted-access Dutch administrative microdata in a secure environment. That experience highlights a central frontier for reproducible science: how to make independent verification possible when the most policy-relevant data cannot be openly shared.
