DESCRIPTION:We would like to kindly invite you the 19.-20.05.2025 to the two-days training course “Open Science skills for Digital Collection Curators”. Under the framework of the Skills4EOSC Horizon Europe Project\, this training aims to promote the establishment of Open Science (OS) skills and practices in Research Data Management (RDM) of digital scientific collections. Expected participants are data stewards/curators/scientists and RDM leaders and/or trainers working on the digital transformation of collection-holding institutions\, such as libraries\, archives\, museums and universities (among others). \nThis event will provide an opportunity to gain general knowledge about OS and the importance of its use in the management of digital data from collections of different research fields through lessons and case studies. Zudem werden die Zertifizierung und Vertrauenswürdigkeit von Repositorien\, die Rolle von Open Science\, rechtliche und ethische Fragestellungen\, sowie die Bedeutung von Ausbildungsmaßnahmen und der Vernetzung innerhalb der Forschungsgemeinschaft thematisiert. \nElisabeth Steiner studierte Linguistik\, Germanistik und Digital Humanities und absolvierte die Ausbildung zum Data Steward. Sie verstärkt das Team des Instituts für Digitale Geisteswissenschaften an der Universität Graz in den Bereichen Metadaten- und Repositorienmanagement. DESCRIPTION:Inhalt\nDas PDF (Portable Document Format) als Format\, das plattformunabhängig eine originalgetreue Darstellung gewährleistet\, ist allgemein verbreitet für die Publikation von Forschungsergebnissen. Hinsichtlich Barrierefreiheit bereitet diese stets identische Darstellung eine Herausforderung\, die erst bewältigt werden kann\, wenn die Inhalte unabhängig vom visuellen Layout greifbar und auch mit assistiven Technologien bedienbar sind. Wie eine Strukturierung der Inhalte im Hintergrund gestaltet wird\, kann bei PDF-Dokumenten veranschaulicht werden – etwa mit dem Tool Screenreader-Vorschau. \nDabei stellen sich folgende Fragen. Was ist ein barrierefreies PDF-Dokument? Was bedeutet „PDF/UA-Konformität“ und „WCAG-Konformität“? Was ist bei Dokumenten in unterschiedlichen Formaten (z.B. Word oder PowerPoint) zu beachten\, um aus ihnen ein möglichst barrierefreies PDF zu erstellen? Wie kann man ein PDF-Dokument auf Barrierefreiheit überprüfen und Fehler beheben? DESCRIPTION:Dr.rer.nat. Hilmar Brohmer\, MSc\n\nIn diesem Workshop wird der Umgang mit dem Open Science Framework Repository (OSF) vorgestellt. Im OSF können Forschungsdaten und Materialien schnell hochgeladen und z.B. in einem Projektsetting geteilt oder auch publiziert werden. Zudem kann es für die Präregistrierung für Studien eingesetzt werden . Diese Präregistrierung kann zudem anonymisiert werden\, um sie – z.B. im Zuge von einem Peer-Review – mit einem Journal zu teilen. \nHilmar Brohmer hat nach dem Studium der Sozial- und Verhaltenswissenschaften an mehreren europäischen Universitäten zwischen 2016 und 2020 sein Doktorat in Psychologie an der Universität Graz absolviert. Im Rahmen seiner Postdoc-Forschung interessiert er sich für das öffentliche Vertrauen in die Wissenschaft\, Metawissenschaft und Umweltpsychologie.

DESCRIPTION:The ZBW Coffee Lecture on Open Science Education is a series of online presentations that showcase examples how to weave the principles\, methods\, and tools of Open Science into university education. Our Coffee Lectures are tailored specifically for those in the fields of economics and management\, though we welcome contributions neighboring disciplines. \nTuesday 24 June 2025 5pm – 6pm \nOpen Source Software and Open Science: A productive pair\nOpen Source Software (OSS) and Open Science are built on the same ideas and borrow heavily from the same philosophical and practical traditions. In practice\, I would go as far as arguing that open science involving computations requires an open software stack. However\, while OSS has become the backbone of much of the world’s scientific and web infrastructure\, adoption in economics has been fairly slow. This is especially true when compared to some fields that have seen rapid progress in recent years\, such as machine learning. I will discuss some reasons for this\, and how we may be able to accelerate the trend. The lecture will include many practical examples\, which draw on own research\, on the course materials of Effective Programming Practices for Economists\, and on the OSS projects pylcm and GETTSIM. \n\nSpeaker:  Hans-Martin von Gaudecker is a Professor of Applied Microeconomics in the Department of Economics of the University of Bonn.

DESCRIPTION:Der Online-Workshop informiert über urheberrechtlichen Fragen bei der Nutzung generativer KI-Systeme. Im Fokus steht dabei die Weiternutzung von KI-Output in Lehrveranstaltungen – auch im Rahmen von offenen Bildungsmaterialien (Open Educational Resources (OER)). \nSysteme generativer KI sind für viele als alltägliches Arbeitsinstrument kaum mehr wegzudenken. Häufig stellen sich den Nutzenden urheberrechtliche Fragen\, einerseits beim Prompten\, aber insbesondere auch bei der Weiternutzung von KI-generierten Inhalten. Inwieweit ist dies zulässig? Besteht eine Kennzeichnungspflicht? Wann sollte von einer Weiternutzung eher abgeraten werden?\nAuch wenn KI-Output im Rahmen offener Bildungsmaterialien (OER) genutzt werden soll\, bestehen Unsicherheiten\, ob dies möglich ist und\, falls ja\, welche Creative-Commons-Lizenz vergeben werden sollte und wie die Lizenzangaben für KI-Inhalte umzusetzen sind. \nZiel der Veranstaltung ist es\, den Teilnehmenden wichtige urheberrechtliche Grundsätze bei Nutzung generativer KI-Systeme zu vermitteln und sie für urheber- und (CC-)lizenzrechtliche Aspekte zu sensibilisieren. Weitere Stationen waren das Lizenzmanagement der ZBW – Leibniz-Informationszentrum Wirtschaft sowie die Vertrags- und Lizenzabteilung einer Hamburger Buchverlagsgruppe. \nIm Rahmen der landesweiten Fortbildungsreihe »Künstliche Intelligenz in der Hochschullehre (FO>KI)« setzt das Hochschulnetzwerk Digitalisierung der Lehre Baden-Württemberg (HND-BW) in Kooperation mit dem Zentrum für Mediales Lernen (ZML) am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) landesweit Veranstaltungen zur Förderung von KI-Kompetenzen bei Lehrenden\, Support-Mitarbeitenden\, Studiengangentwickler*innen\, Hochschulleitungen und Studierenden an allen Hochschulen in Baden-Württemberg auf. FO>KI wird vom Ministerium für Wissenschaft\, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg und vom Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft gefördert.

FSCI organizers have sought and found course submissions contributing to and exploring this theme\, though all ideas in scholarly communication were welcome for consideration. The theme has also shaped the institute’s plenary events. \nSo take a look at our FSCI 2025 Courses & Abstracts\, select a course or two – and then Register Today!\nIn a world where AI plays a role in an increasing amount of our workflows\, we all work to increasing draw the academic publishing community towards a world of Open Scholarship\, in various ways and at differing levels. FSCI is a platform for professionals in the field to educate your colleagues about an aspect of this important work. FSCI courses often focus on one particular aspect of this work and provide practical training\, while paying attention to the broader issues at play. Other FSCI courses look more squarely at theoretical problems and explore new solutions. We hope to focus on these components as we present a variety of courses on topics across the scholarly communication ecosphere. Further\, please help us get the word out to your colleagues in research and scholarly communication by sharing this information with your network. DESCRIPTION:Join us on 27 February from 11-12 CET for an overview of the support programmes you can apply to join as a mentor or mentee in the first open call for FIDELIS mentoring and peer to peer support. \n  \nThis is the first of two open calls for FIDELIS mentoring and peer to peer support and will run over the second half of 2026. In this open call\, we invite applications to join one of five thematic support programmes: \n\n1. Trustworthy at national and international levels\n2: Data curation\, access and preservation policies\n3: Fostering engagement between repositories and end users\n4: Active Data Curation for technical repository staff\n5: Training approaches for repository staff\n\nThis webinar will provide more information about the support programmes\, what is expected from mentors\, financial support provided\, and how to apply. The session will allow ample time for questions from participants and will last no longer than one hour. \nRegistration for this webinar is free and open to all. \n  \nThrough two open calls\, FIDELIS will allocate a total of €200\,000 in financial support to enable around 40 successful applicants to participate as mentors in one of a series of defined support programmes. \nEach of the defined support programmes will focus on a particular theme related to Trustworthy Digital Repositories and will aim to share real-life experiences on tools\, methods and/or approaches that have been taken. Successful applicants to the open call will receive a standard day rate of 500 EUR/day to support their active participation in a given support programme.The support programme will require 10 days of effort and a total of 5000 euros will be paid upon completion of the support programme.

DESCRIPTION:Die Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information wurde im April 2024 veröffentlicht und hat das Ziel\, offene Forschungsinformationen als Standard in der  Wissenschaftscommunity zu etablieren. Während kommerzielle Anbieter den Zugriff auf Metadaten oft exklusiv kontrollieren\, zeigt die Barcelona Declaration den Weg zu einer unabhängigen und transparenten Forschungsinfrastruktur mit  offenen Forschungsinformationen wie Metadaten zu Publikationen\, Forschungsprojekten und weiteren forschungsrelevanten Informationen. \nOrganisiert vom Cluster Forschung+Daten beleuchtet dieses Webinar die konkreten Auswirkungen einer solchen Wende auf die österreichische Community. Wir gehen mit einem hochkarätigen internationalen Panel der Frage nach\, wie der Weg zu offenen Forschungsinformationen in der Praxis aussehen kann. Konkret sollen dabei folgende Fragen beantwortet werden: \n\nImplementierung: Was bedeutet es konkret für eine Forschungsstätte\, wenn sie die Barcelona Declaration unterzeichnen will? SUMMARY:Wie sollte eine faire Finanzierung von Open Access aussehen?
DESCRIPTION:Wissenschaftliches Publizieren im Open Access (OA) wird heute von den kommerziellen Zielen einer sehr kleinen Anzahl von umsatzorientierten\, global agierenden Medienkonzernen dominiert (Gatti et al. 2025\, 14). Im Mai 2023 erklärte der Rat der Europäischen Kommission\, dass das aktuelle System des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens für öffentliche Forschungsförderer zunehmend unbezahlbar wird. Die steigenden Kosten haben global die Forderung nach einem Wechsel zu nicht gewinnorientierten Publikationsmodellen gestärkt\, siehe UNESCO Diamond Open Access Alliance\, 2024. \nImmer stärker etablieren sich Forderungen\, Diamond Open Access (DOA) Publikationsmodelle im Bereich des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens zu finanzieren\, um das aktuelle System zu transformieren und die Abhängigkeit der Wissenschaft vom kommerziellen Verlagswesen zu verringern. Die ab 2025 von der DFG geförderte Servicestelle Diamond Open Access (SeDOA) unterstützt diesen Ansatz. Zudem betont die Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina die Skalierbarkeit von nicht gewinnorientierten OA-Publikationsmodellen als entscheidender Faktor für eine erfolgreiche Transformation\, da Wissenschaftseinrichtungen mit wenigen Medienkonzernen auf dem Publikationsmarkt konkurrieren (Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina 2025\, 34). Entsprechende Finanzierungsstrukturen können die Implementierung offener Infrastrukturen und damit die gesamte Open-Research-Transformation positiv beeinflussen. \nFür den Forschungsraum Berlin-Brandenburg ist das faire und nachhaltige Finanzieren von  Open Access ein drängendes Thema (Neufend et al. 2024)\, das aufgrund der Unsicherheiten in der Finanzierung von Wissenschafts- und Kulturerbe-Einrichtungen alle Einrichtungstypen unterschiedlich betrifft. In dieser Veranstaltung möchten wir mit Akteur*innen ins Gespräch kommen\, die bereits eine nachhaltige\, faire und kollektive Finanzierung von Open Access unterstützen und ermöglichen. \nAuf dem virtuellen Podium möchten wir entlang folgender Fragen diskutieren: \n\nIst das nicht gewinnorientierte Publizieren kostengünstiger als kommerzielle APC- und BPC-Modelle?\nWelches Verständnis von Fairness ist maßgeblich für faires OA?\nWas ist der Wert und was sind die Kosten des nicht gewinnorientierten Publizierens und wie können entsprechende Ressourcen bereitgestellt werden?\nWie können einzelne Akteure im Forschungsökosystem nicht gewinnorientiertes Publizieren unterstützen?\nWas sind notwendige Finanzierungsstrukturen\, die nicht gewinnorientiertes Publizieren nach fairen Prinzipien ermöglichen?\nWas lässt sich aus einer kritischen Reflektion bisheriger großangelegter Transformationsverträge und den daraus entstandenen Kriterien lernen?\nWas sind die Alternativen zu solchen großangelegten\, kommerziellen Ansätzen im wissenschaftlichen Publizieren?

This time\, the focus will be on how reproducibility can be taught in economics and what significance it holds for research\, professional qualifications and career development. \nTeaching Reproducibility for Professional Development and Intellectual Growth \n23 April 2026 | 15:00 – 16:00 CEST \nOnline | in English \nOrganised by: ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics \n  \nReproducibility has long been more than just a methodological detail. It plays an increasingly important role in the quality of academic work and in how research is taught and learned today. But how can this topic be effectively conveyed in teaching? \nIn this Open Science Education Coffee Lecture\, Richard Ball\, Professor of Economics at Haverford College (USA)\, will provide insights into the work of Project TIER\, which he has helped shape for many years. As a member of the Executive Committee\, he is one of the individuals who help shape the project’s content and strategy. His talk is therefore not only an introduction to the approaches of Project TIER\, but also an opportunity to explore the development of reproducible research from a perspective that closely integrates teaching and research. \nRichard Ball will demonstrate how transparency and reproducibility have been systematically integrated into the teaching of quantitative methods in the economic and social sciences since 2013. This involves specific teaching approaches\, methodological and professional skills\, and the question of how the standards of scientific research have changed in recent years – for example\, through data and code policies and the establishment of replication archives.

SUMMARY:Webinar: OMERO – A Platform for Image Data Management
DESCRIPTION:The Health Data Research Hub (HDRH) at the Medical University of Graz provides a secure data environment and standardized interfaces that form the foundation for data excellence across the entire research data lifecycle—from study planning and the creation of data management plans to long-term storage and the secure reuse of data in analytical environments. \nThis presentation will focus on OMERO\, an open-source platform developed by the Open Microscopy Environment (OME) for the centralized storage\, management\, visualization\, and analysis of microscopy and bioimaging data\, including associated metadata. Its client–server architecture enables location-independent access via web and desktop clients\, while an access-controlled infrastructure ensures secure data management and distribution. \nBy automatically capturing microscope metadata\, OMERO supports transparent and reproducible research in accordance with the FAIR principles. In addition\, it offers compatibility with numerous bioimaging file formats\, as well as APIs and plugins that enable high interoperability. \nThe presentation will conclude with a short live demonstration of OMERO and selected workflows.

DESCRIPTION:With the Open Science Retreat (OSR) the ZBW brings together international Open Science supporters from different stakeholder groups. Again\, we are planning two sessions where we will dive deeply into the topics that are of burning interest to us all. \nWe cordially invite you to join our 10thOpen Science Retreat that will be held virtually on 6 & 7 May 2026\, 15:00-17:00 CEST. \nIt is dedicated to the theme “The future of Open Science amid authoritarianism\, geopolitical tensions and aspirations for data sovereignty”. \n  \nFundamental scientific principles and findings are under unprecedented attack: Disinformation and science scepticism has reached new levels\, threatening the very foundations of democracy and science. Autocratic governments are attempting to restrict academic freedom and to use science and research to legitimise their very own political narratives and agendas. At the same time\, geopolitical tensions are deepening\, leading to increased security concerns in science and research\, potentially leading to less openness\, collaboration and communication among researchers around the globe. Last but not least\, these developments are also having a significant impact on the availability of research infrastructures and Open Science materials.
