SUMMARY:Info webinar on data access for researchers under the Digital Services Act
DESCRIPTION:Under article 40 of the Digital Services Act (DSA)\, vetted researchers will be able to request data from very large online platforms (VLOPs) and search engines (VLOSEs) to conduct research on systemic risks in the EU. \nA draft delegated act clarifies the procedures leading to the sharing of data by VLOPs and VLOSEs with vetted researchers. It also specifies conditions for providing such data and establishes a DSA data access portal to serve as a one-stop-shop for researchers\, data providers and Digital Services Coordinators (DSCs). \nThe European Commission is hosting an info webinar\, targeted at researchers who would like to learn more about the delegated act and how it might benefit their research. It will take place on 19 November\, 10:00-11:30.

SUMMARY:World Science Day 2024 Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated each year on 10 November\, this year’s World Science Day for Peace and Development theme at UNESCO Headquarters is ‘Why Science Matters – Engaging Minds and Empowering Futures’. \nOn this occasion\, UNESCO is organising a webinar with experts in the field on 12 November to highlight the significant role of science in society and in our daily lives. \nClick here to sign up for the webinar. \nContext\nIn August 2023\, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed the period 2024-2033 as the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development. This marks an important step in global efforts to harness scientific knowledge for a sustainable future. Led by UNESCO\, this Decade aims to mobilize a wide range of scientific disciplines\, including basic and applied sciences\, social and human sciences\, as well as interdisciplinary and emerging fields\, to contribute to transformative change in societies\, economies\, and the environment. By promoting scientific literacy and encouraging collaboration among governments\, UN agencies\, the private sector and civil society\, the Decade seeks to enhance science’s role in pursuing sustainable development goals and working towards a safer\, more prosperous future for all. \nYouth at the forefront\nThis year’s World Science Day for Peace and Development will be held under the aegis of the Decade. It will present an opportunity to engage a wide-range audience\, with a focus on young people (including through the UNESCO Youth Forum and Science Youth Network) and non-scientific participants in discovering and exploring the role of science in our rapidly-changing digitalized world. Young people will have the opportunity to ask questions to distinguished scientists about the ways in which science affects our daily lives and contributes to finding solutions to the most pressing challenges that the world is facing from local to global levels.

SUMMARY:Fair Open Access Funds - What libraries can do to promote Diamond Open Access
DESCRIPTION:The BMBF-funded project open-access.network invites you to an information event as part of the information series “Shaping the Open Access transformation sustainably. Diamond OA as an alternative”: \nFair Open Access Funds – What libraries can do to promote Diamond Open Access \nWednesday\, 6 November 2024 | 1pm – 2:15 pm (CET) | online | The event is held in English. \nAs both subscription and publication costs for scientific journals and monographs continue to rise\, there is much discussion about Diamond Open Access as an alternative funding option. But how can academic libraries support Diamond Open Access? One approach is to create seperate publication funds for Fair Open Acccess. In Fair Open Access\, the focus is primarily on supporting publishing infrastructures and academic initiatives in order to strenghten scholar-led publishing. The Fair Open Access Alliance (FOAA) has outlined five key principles that journals must adhere to in order to qualify as Fair Open Access. These include: 1) being led by the academic community\, 2) ensuring that authors retain the copyright to their work\, 3) providing immediate and unrestricted Open Access to all content\, 4) separating submission and publication from mandatory fees\, and 5) maintaining low\, transparent\, and proportionate costs for any necessary fees. To support Fair Open Access initiatives\, some university libraries allocate dedicated financial resources through Fair Open Access funds: \nDemmy Verbeke will introduce the KU Leuven Fund for Fair Open Access\, which is dedicated to promoting a cost-effective and sustainable implementation of Open Science. The fund supports the development of new publishing models\, as well as Open Science initiatives and infrastructures\, with the goal of steering away from expensive\, for-profit business models and empowering scholars to regain control of the publishing process. \nMichaela Voigt  will talk about the Technische Universität (TU) Berlin and its University Library which will launch a Fair Open Access Fund in 2024. to further expand the existing support for Open Access. The focus of Fair OA funding is on publication or infrastructure projects that strengthen sustainable and open publication structures\, promote diversity instead of monopolism and see cooperation as a driving force for innovation. \nAt the event\, we want to present these best practices and discuss the following topics: \n\nWhat considerations preceded the establishment of a Fair OA Fund at KU Leuven and TU Berlin and what criteria do they use as a guide?\nHow do Fair Open Access Funds work?\nWhat experience has been gained?\nHow can the approach be transferred to other institutions?\n\nIf you have any questions about the event\, please contact Karin Stork (karin.stork@uni-konstanz.de) or Martina Benz (martina.benz@uni-konstanz.de).

SUMMARY:CARE-Prinzipien

SUMMARY:Shaping the Future of Cultural Heritage: “Connecting the Cultural Heritage Cloud with the common European data space for cultural heritage and the European Open Science Cloud”
DESCRIPTION:The Cultural Heritage Cloud – or European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) – is a European Union initiative to create a digital infrastructure that will connect cultural heritage researchers and professionals across the EU. It will develop specific digital collaborative tools for the sector while removing barriers for smaller and remote institutions. The goal is to help cultural heritage institutions\, research organisations and other professional organisations of all kinds and sizes to work with their digital objects in a more visible\, interconnected\, harmonised\, and informed way\, to successfully cope with the challenges the digital transition poses to the sector and seize its opportunities. The Cultural Heritage Cloud will add a new digital dimension to cultural heritage preservation\, conservation\, restoration and enhancement by providing cutting-edge technologies\, for instance for the digitization of artefacts or for researching artworks. The implementation of this initiative has now begun with the EU-funded project ECHOES – European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science\, which started on the 1 of June 2024. \nTwo other initiatives are currently running at European level: \n\nfunded by the Digital Europe programme\, the common European data space for cultural heritage is an EU flagship initiative to accelerate the digital transformation of the sector and foster creation\, access and reuse of heritage data.\nThe vision for the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is to put in place a system for researchers in Europe to store\, share\, process\, analyse\, and reuse data within and across disciplines and borders.\n\nIn this webinar\, we’ll learn more about the Cloud and two other European initiatives\, and how they are interconnected and complementary\, how these initiatives interact with the Cloud\, and what the added value of such connections is for the cultural heritage community.

SUMMARY:Maturity Model for Pathogen Data Platforms
DESCRIPTION:Maturity models are a useful tool to support data platform managers in assessing current gaps in their maturity and development lifecycle. The Pathogen Data Platform maturity model specifically targets managers of data platforms that host on pathogens\, and associated\, contextual sensitive\, personal metadata. It was developed within ELIXIR-CONVERGE and tested in a pilot run within BY-COVID. It is very largely inspired from the maturity model of the Federated EGA. \nDuring this highly interactive workshop\, generally addressed to platform managers and those involved in platform development (bioinformaticians\, ITs\, legal services etc.)\, we will present practical illustrations of how to understand and score the various indicators of the maturity model\, with examples focusing on SARS-CoV-2\, bacterial\, and wastewater data. We will also discuss the importance of ensuring FAIRness of platforms by design and how maturity models can support this.
