DESCRIPTION:Brussels — The European Commission has opened a public survey to gather input from stakeholders on the upcoming Charter of Access for Industrial Users to Research and Technology Infrastructures.\nBuilding on the revised Charter for Access to Research Infrastructures\, the new Charter will focus specifically on improving access for companies. Its goal is to make it easier for businesses\, particularly SMEs\, startups\, and scaleups\, to benefit from Europe’s world-class research and technology infrastructures. The survey will close on 10 December 2025 and the final Charter is expected to be presented in 2026. \nThe Charter aims to improve access to infrastructures through six proposed principles: \n\nIncreased visibility and availability of services\nTransparency and quality of services\nSimplified contract and agreement procedures\nSafe intellectual property management\nPriority to companies in the EU\nCooperation between infrastructures and access to data

DESCRIPTION:For research assessment to truly support Open Science\, we must prioritise transparency\, inclusivity\, and fairness in how we recognise research activities and contributions. This means not only ensuring that all contributions to Open Science are valued but also promoting openness in the data\, tools\, services\, and other resources used in the assessment process. \nWe invite you to our Conference on Opening Research Assessment\, where we will present the results of the GraspOS project and engage in discussions on transforming research assessment into a system that is open\, responsible and aligned with the principles of Open Science. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe GraspOS project supports the emerging policy reforms and paves the way for a responsible research assessment system that is fully aware of and integrated with Open Science practices. GraspOS focuses on developing\, assessing\, and operating an open federated infrastructure designed to aggregate open resources that can catalyse the implementation of relevant policy reforms. \nThe Conference will not only showcase the key outcomes and insights of the project\, but will also feature invited talks and expert panels addressing critical topics for advancing a responsible research assessment system that fully embraces Open Science principles including: \n\n\n\nOpen infrastructures for responsible research assessment\nTransparency and inclusivity of the assessment processes\nRecognition of contributions to Open Science \n\n\n\nWe also invite poster contributions aligned with these themes by anyone interested. Guidelines on how to submit a contribution for the Poster Session are available below.

SUMMARY:Open Science in the light of geopolitical polarisation
DESCRIPTION:The current geopolitical landscape is characterised by rising political and trade tensions as well as heightened economic interest in scientific innovation. This polarisation has significant implications for the global scientific community\, particularly in the pursuit of Open Science. Could the naivety of science be exploited? Where is the line between scientific idealism and naivety? \nAs major global powers engage in systemic rivalries\, the conduct of science is increasingly influenced by national security concerns\, export controls\, and sanctions that can restrict the free flow of ideas\, data\, and researchers across borders. Meanwhile\, global challenges such as pandemics\, climate change\, and technology-based development require international scientific collaboration and universal knowledge development. The normative nature of the scientific ethos is increasingly in tension with political forces that demand that science be both vigilant and competitive. \nHow can Open Science – with its emphasis on transparency\, collaboration\, efficiency and validity of scientific results – be sustained in the light of these competing interests? \nDuring this year’s Open Science Days\, we will explore these tensions by discussing the interrelations of Open Science\, political interests\, and innovation. We will ask how research organizations can reconcile Open Science policies with resilience and competitiveness. \n\n\nAbout Open Science Days\nThe Open Science Days (OSD) are periodically organised by the Max Planck Digital Library. \nIn the context of this conferences we deal with various aspects of a global movement towards a more open\, transparent and reproducible approach to science. Aside from invited expert talks\, participants get the opportunity to present their own ideas\, experiences\, initiatives or activities in a Lightning Talk session. It is an open discussion platform around current Open Science developments. \nThe hybrid event is directed at researchers and specialists outside the Max Planck Society as well as within. SUMMARY:Call for Papers: FAIR Digital Objects Forum
DESCRIPTION:Call for Papers\, Posters & Lightning Talks\nFAIR Digital Objects (FDO) are autonomous information units that virtually bind all information in a machine-actionable way that is required to make data FAIR\, including various kinds of metadata and globally unique and resolvable persistent identifiers (PIDs). FDOs provide a conceptual and implementation framework to develop scalable cross-disciplinary capabilities\, deal with increasing data volumes and their inherent complexity\, build tools that help increase trust in data\, create mechanisms to efficiently operate in the domain of scientific assertions\, and promote data interoperability. In addition\, FDOs play a foundational role in implementing widely accepted trust frameworks\, which are characterised by the STAP principles (Sovereignty\, Transparency\, Accountability\, Persistence). These principles underpin large-scale data exploration supported by AI. \nAbout the Conference\nFor the third time at this scale\, the FDO2026 Conference (link) will bring together leading experts from science and industry\, technologists\, data stewards/managers\, and policymakers engaged in advancing FAIR Digital Objects (FDOs). The conference will feature a mix of invited presentations\, panels\, posters and demonstrators. It will be associated with a day of tutorials and a newcomer session. The first conference focused on discussing and finalising basic specifications\, while the second conference concentrated on practical implementations of the FDO concept (testbeds\, demonstrators). This third conference will explore the relevance of the FDOs for turning to a global data landscape characterised by the STAP Principles\, tackle the integration of FDOs with data use control technologies (dataspace technologies) and examine the challenges and showcase successful demonstrations of interoperability between different implementations. The conference will take place at the facilities of the Technische Universität Wien. Video interaction options and video recordings of all sessions and the training sessions will be provided. \nExpected Contributions\nFor the conference the organisers are seeking contributions that (1) offer insights into practical developments and real-world functionality of FAIR Digital Objects (FDOs)\, or (2) outline strategic plans for their adoption\,  or (3) demonstrate how FDOs can interoperate and thus contribute to the advancement of global trust frameworks guided by the STAP principles. We invite the submission of extended abstracts consistent with the conference themes and objectives and address FDOs\, in particular: \n\nUse of the FDO concept for structuring the emerging domain of disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge in the research domain.\nImportance of FDOs’ abstraction\, binding and encapsulation properties for data-driven and cross-domain research.\nUse of FDOs in data-driven projects or processes from the perspective of  researchers and/or technologists using different approaches.\nReports on implementations of FDOs and associated components such as PIDs\, PID/FDO Profiles\, PID Kernel Attributes\, Types\, Type Registries\, DOIP\, FDO-compliant repositories\, Signposting\, etc.\nPlans and use of FDOs to implement operations\, workflows\, secure environments and collections.\nApplications of FDOs in research-based education or in specific skills development.\nShowcases where FAIR Implementation and FDO compliance profiles led to a change of practices towards FDO usage or consumption\, particularly across FDO deployments.\nValidation or evaluation of FDOs\, FDO profiles and/or FDO types.\nUse of FDOs to build a cross-disciplinary\, global and distributed testbed.\nImplementing FDOs in the realm of dataspace technology to build bridges.\nFDO interoperability solutions to enable cross-walks.\nFDO in the European Open Science Cloud or any other large funding program..\nExperiences of adopting FDO approaches in infrastructures and pathways to adoption.\nThe potential of FDOs to increase FAIRness and support Open Science.\nThe potential of FDOs to build a global data landscape characterised by the STAP principles.\nOther contributions that focus on the concept\, development\, or application of FDOs.\n\nPlease note: Contributions that address FAIR and the STAP Principles in a general way should be submitted to other conferences. The focus here needs to be on the specific contributions using FDOs. \nSubmission of abstracts for Papers and Lightning Talks\nFor presentations\, please submit extended abstracts of up to two pages (excluding references and diagrams). For posters and lightning talks\, submit extended abstracts of up to one page (excluding references and diagrams). SUMMARY:National Open Science Festival
DESCRIPTION:Open Science NL is delighted that the University of Groningen (UG) and the University Medical Center (UMCG) have generously offered to host this year’s festival. The one-day event will be held in the buildings of the UMCG. \nLike last year\, the festival is organised by a team with representatives from the host institution\, Open Science NL\, DANS\, and the National Coordination Point for Research Data Management (LCRDM). In addition\, the programme will be curated by an independent committee\, ensuring broad community representation. They will also discuss regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act and the Data Governance Act\, examining their implications for everyday research practices\, data access\, institutional compliance\, and scientific accountability.. \nA key theme is data governance: understanding data as both a research resource and a matter of power\, access\, and control. Participants will consider how data infrastructures shape knowledge and how ethical and legal principles can ensure fairness and trust in research. \nGuided by the idea of digital humanism and through interactive discussions\, participants will engage with real-world scenarios\, such as handling training data\, ensuring fairness in automated systems\, and aligning institutional practices with evolving EU regulations. \nWho is the trainer? \nMatthias C. Kettemann is Professor of Innovation\, Theory and Philosophy of Law and head of the Department for Theory and Future of Law at the University of Innsbruck. DESCRIPTION:This year\, the Annual Forum will offer a mixture of individual presentations\, moderated round table discussions\, and workshops. As accessibility lies at the hearts of everything we do\, this will be a fully hybrid event\, with all in-person activities live streamed\, in English and Arabic. The programme will include a full day of online presentations\, two days of in-person presentations\, and a half day of high-impact workshops. \nReflecting the overarching message of last year’s Annual Forum concerning the need to collaborate as individuals\, as institutions\, as communities and countries – within our local environment and as a region – this year’s theme focuses on building our open science communities and developing our open science capacities. \nGiven the UAE has designated 2025 as the Year of Community\, we are therefore particularly delighted to be able to announce that this year’s Annual Forum\, will take place in the UAE\, in partnership with the American University of Sharjah. We are honoured to be partnering with this institution\, a regional leader for research and education in the Arab world. DESCRIPTION:From 16 to 18 October 2025\, the 4th United Nations Open Science and Open Scholarship Conference will convene policymakers\, IGO representatives\, researchers\, scholars\, librarians\, publishers\, and civil society\, both online and in person at the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo\, Japan. \nThe Conference will serve as an urgent call to accelerate transformations in science and scholarship in alignment with the Pact for the Future\, to map progress in national and international efforts towards opening the record of science\, and to inspire collaborative actions and coalitions to expedite progress ensuring no country\, community\, or individual is left behind. \nIn September 2024\, at the Summit of the Future\, all 193 Member States of the United Nations adopted the action-oriented Pact for the Future. The Pact underscores that science is instrumental for the three pillars of the United Nations – sustainable development\, peace and security\, and human rights. Recognizing the potential for science to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, the Pact supports policies toward open science and open innovation to help bridge science gaps especially in developing countries. \nDespite these significant commitments\, billions of people – especially in developing countries – still lack meaningful access to participate in and benefit from critical scientific knowledge\, research infrastructure\, and emerging technologies. Open science and open scholarship provide a transformative pathway to reverse these trends\, fostering multilateral cooperation\, responsible innovation\, and the equitable dissemination of knowledge. As stated in the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science\, we must ensure “reciprocal access to science for all producers and consumers of knowledge regardless of their location\, nationality\, race\, age\, gender\, income\, socio-economic circumstance\, career stage\, discipline\, language\, religion\, disability\, ethnicity\, migratory status or any other grounds”. More:

We hope to brief you on any relevant positions taken by the countries and the new or continuing legal instruments available for the evolution of EOSC and the EOSC Federation.

DESCRIPTION:The Open Science Conference is an annual international conference dedicated to the Open Science movement. It provides a unique forum for researchers\, data stewards\, librarians\, practitioners\, infrastructure providers\, policy makers\, and other important stakeholders to discuss the latest and future developments in Open Science. In 2025\, the conference returns to its roots and takes place as a face-to-face event in Hamburg again. \nThis year’s conference will have a special focus on the intersection between Open Science and AI. The rapid integration of artificial intelligence and corresponding tools into scientific research poses both new challenges but also opportunities for Open Science practices. SUMMARY:ERIS 2025
DESCRIPTION:Since 2005 the Association for the Development of Information Society jointly with the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Science launched the EIS conference (Education in the Information Society). Initially\, it was intended to serve as a forum attracting educational topics capturing the fast development of learning technologies but in 2013 it was rebranded to Education and Research in the Information Society (ERIS). During that initial period various topics on emerging technologies such as E-learning and education support systems\, Serious games and virtual reality\, Web technologies and cloud computing\, Social networks and security of the Web environment\, User modelling and user-adaptive systems\, Natural language processing and information retrieval\, Big data management and analysis\, Knowledge discovery from data and text\, Approaches for addressing cultural diversity and users with special needs\, Innovative systems for e-governance\, e-health and e-libraries\, Social and legal aspects of the information society were discussed.\nThe forum targeted mainly leading research from Bulgarian academic institutions\, adding to the programme contributions by invited speakers.\nResponding to the interest beyond Bulgaria\, since 2021 the ERIS conference was again updated with a new look and structure\, and a vision to become again one of the leading computer science events in South-Eastern Europe. \nThe conference has several strengths: \n\nPossibility to publish your work.\nUseful feedback: The conference follows a thorough review process – each paper is reviewed by two members of the international programme committee.\nReasonable registration fees: Being supported by ADIS\, the conference also has a very moderate conference fee.\nOffering state-of-the-art content: the cycle for submitting and selecting papers is compact which allows project research with new results to be presented very expediently.\n\n
