SUMMARY:PIDfest 2026
DESCRIPTION:PIDfest 2026 will take place in Leiden\, the Netherlands\, from October 27-29\, 2026. It is intended to be a global meeting place for everyone who cares about keeping knowledge connected – across people\, systems\, disciplines\, borders\, and time. Our goal is to grow a broader\, more diverse\, more global Persistent Identifier community\, from first-timers to infrastructure leaders. \nOur theme this year is Keeping Knowledge Connected\, and the Call for Proposals is open now through March 22. We welcome proposals from all PID enthusiasts\, wherever you are on your PID journey – and in a range of session formats\, including short talks\, panels\, workshops\, “birds of a feather” sessions\, interactive presentations\, lightning talks\, and posters. Please note that you must be able to deliver your presentation in person. \nIf you have an idea that doesn’t fit neatly into one of these formats\, we’d still love to hear about it. We may even be able to connect you with other interested groups with whom you share a synergy and potential for a successful session. \n\n\nHow to submit your proposal \n\nPlease see our brief writing guide for proposals for ideas on how to pitch your session. When you’re ready you can submit your proposal here (please note that you will need to set up an account on the SURF platform where the proposal form is hosted – you will then be able to access and edit your proposal any time before the deadline). \nThe Call for Proposals will remain open through March 22. All submissions will be anonymised and reviewed by the Programme Committee\, who aim to contact everyone about their decisions by April 30.

P27 will be hosted by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)\, the UK’s largest public research funder. \n\n\nUKRI brings together seven Research Councils (covering all domains)\, Research England and Innovate UK. It has a strong history of investment in open research and research infrastructure. DESCRIPTION:Open Science is an integral part of today’s research. It encompasses a wide range of practices and outputs across all stages of the research lifecycle. For instance\, researchers share their publications via repositories\, publish in Open Access journals\, and disseminate early findings through preprints. They make their data FAIR\, preregister their research protocols\, and engage the public through Citizen Science initiatives. \nChallenges include selecting the most appropriate channel for publishing research\, considering the economic implications of this choice\, as well as managing the learning curve and time investment required to implement certain Open Science principles. At the same time\, researchers must navigate various considerations\, including GDPR compliance\, intellectual property rights\, and research security. KU Leuven is committed to Open Science\, guided by the principle: “as open as possible\, as closed as necessary.” \nThe Open Science Day is an opportunity for researchers of the KU Leuven Association to take part in this discussion\, to showcase their own Open Science efforts\, to shed a light on difficulties they might encounter\, to share experiences and solutions.

DESCRIPTION:The Health Data Research Hub (HDRH) at the Medical University of Graz provides a secure data environment and standardized interfaces that form the foundation for data excellence across the entire research data lifecycle—from study planning and the creation of data management plans to long-term storage and the secure reuse of data in analytical environments. \nThis presentation will focus on OMERO\, an open-source platform developed by the Open Microscopy Environment (OME) for the centralized storage\, management\, visualization\, and analysis of microscopy and bioimaging data\, including associated metadata. Its client–server architecture enables location-independent access via web and desktop clients\, while an access-controlled infrastructure ensures secure data management and distribution. \nBy automatically capturing microscope metadata\, OMERO supports transparent and reproducible research in accordance with the FAIR principles. In addition\, it offers compatibility with numerous bioimaging file formats\, as well as APIs and plugins that enable high interoperability. \nThe presentation will conclude with a short live demonstration of OMERO and selected workflows.

SUMMARY:FOR2026 Conference: The Future of Open Research: Reliable\, Responsible\, Equitable
DESCRIPTION:The future of open research is uncertain. On the one hand\, decades of activism and institutional support have placed the value and significance of intelligent strategies and formats for open research (and its dissemination) beyond doubt. Openness is central to the development of trustworthy\, accountable\, collaborative\, and socially engaged knowledge. On the other hand\, open research measures need to be tailored to diverse research conditions around the globe and across domains\, which in turn requires substantial investment\, local engagement\, responsiveness to the ethical and social dimensions of inquiry\, and attention to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. \nWhile the implementation of open science principles is certainly facilitated by ever more accessible digital technologies and training programmes\, for many researchers around the world\, acquiring the expertise and skills to engage in open research practices remains elusive. Exposure to open research initiatives often happens as an end-user rather than as an active contributor. This is because well-resourced environments produce the tools\, set the research goals\, define the standards and methods\, which leads to them benefiting disproportionally from the opportunities. This makes even the best-intentioned projects into opportunities for the best-resourced environments (which are often in charge of producing open science tools) to impose their own understanding of research goals\, standards\, and methods on everybody else. Therefore\, without domain- and location-specific input\, the risk is that open research amplifies existing inequities and discrimination in the production\, use\, and evaluation of knowledge\, thereby inflicting damage to the research system instead of the promised improvements. And this is not to mention the ongoing debates over how politically unpalatable open science may be\, the extent to which open research has been appropriated by commercial entities such as large publishing companies and digital platforms\, the fraught intersection between open science and artificial intelligence\, and the ongoing difficulties in supporting and maintaining open research activities and tools in the long term. \nThis conference brings together scholars\, activists\, and policymakers to consider this challenging landscape and discuss the future of open research. Our goal is to facilitate the development of open research practices explicitly geared to serve the public interest\, which involves interrogating what may constitute that ‘public interest’ to different audiences and in different locations around the world. A central element for our discussions will be the development of a Munich Manifesto for Equitable Open Research\, detailing ways to utilise open research to foster reliable\, responsible\, and equitable forms of inquiry. A draft text of the manifesto will be circulated two weeks before the conference to all participants\, and one session of the conference will be dedicated to discussing and finalising the declaration and its possible signatories. \nWe call for contributions by researchers across all fields of knowledge\, including the arts and humanities\, policy-makers interested in research and development\, representatives of scholarly and commercial institutions involved in research\, and civil society associations engaged in knowledge production.

It plays an increasingly important role in the quality of academic work and in how research is taught and learned today. But how can this topic be effectively conveyed in teaching? \nIn this Open Science Education Coffee Lecture\, Richard Ball\, Professor of Economics at Haverford College (USA)\, will provide insights into the work of Project TIER\, which he has helped shape for many years. As a member of the Executive Committee\, he is one of the individuals who help shape the project’s content and strategy. His talk is therefore not only an introduction to the approaches of Project TIER\, but also an opportunity to explore the development of reproducible research from a perspective that closely integrates teaching and research. \nRichard Ball will demonstrate how transparency and reproducibility have been systematically integrated into the teaching of quantitative methods in the economic and social sciences since 2013. This involves specific teaching approaches\, methodological and professional skills\, and the question of how the standards of scientific research have changed in recent years – for example\, through data and code policies and the establishment of replication archives.

DESCRIPTION:Die Europäische Kommission hat zwei neue Aufforderungen zur Einreichung von Vorschlägen im Rahmen des Clusters „Digitalisierung\, Industrie und Raumfahrt“ des Arbeitsprogramms „Horizont Europa“ veröffentlicht\, mit denen 307\,3 Mio. EUR zur Stärkung der digitalen Innovation und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit Europas bereitgestellt werden. \n\n\n\nInsgesamt 221\,8 Mio. EUR sind für eine Initiative bestimmt\, die sich auf die Entwicklung vertrauenswürdiger Dienste der künstlichen Intelligenz (KI)\, innovativer Datendienste und die Sicherung der strategischen Autonomie der EU konzentriert. Im Rahmen der Aufforderung werden Projekte finanziert\, die zur Entwicklung von KI beitragen\, einschließlich Maßnahmen zur Unterstützung der Strategie „Anwenden von KI“\, der Robotik\, der Quantentechnologien\, der Photonik und virtueller Welten. Mit mehr als 40 Mio. EUR für die „Open Internet Stack Initiative“ werden sowohl Endnutzeranwendungen als auch Technologien innerhalb der Stacks entwickelt\, um europäische souveräne digitale Gemeingüter zu unterstützen. \nFür die zweite Aufforderung zur Einreichung von Vorschlägen stehen zusätzliche 85\,5 Mio. EUR zur Verfügung\, mit denen eine offene strategische Autonomie bei digitalen und neu entstehenden Technologien und Rohstoffen unterstützt wird. Es wird sich auf Themen wie KI-Agenten der nächsten Generation\, Robotik für Industrie- und Serviceanwendungen und die Entwicklung neuer Materialien mit verbesserten Sensorfunktionen konzentrieren. \nDiese Aufforderungen zur Einreichung von Vorschlägen fördern nachhaltige Innovation und die europäische Führungsrolle bei strategischen digitalen Technologien im Einklang mit dem Kompass der Kommission für Wettbewerbsfähigkeit. Mit diesen Investitionen will die Kommission die Führungsrolle bei strategischen Technologien durch nachhaltige\, auf den Menschen ausgerichtete Innovationen sichern. \nCluster 4 des Arbeitsprogramms von Horizont Europa „Digitalisierung\, Industrie und Raumfahrt“ ist strategisch darauf ausgerichtet\, die Führungsrolle und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit Europas in wichtigen strategischen digitalen Sektoren wie KI\, Quantentechnologie\, künftigen digitalen Netzen\, virtuellen Welten und anderen Schlüsseltechnologien zu beschleunigen. SUMMARY:Wie sollte eine faire Finanzierung von Open Access aussehen?
DESCRIPTION:Wissenschaftliches Publizieren im Open Access (OA) wird heute von den kommerziellen Zielen einer sehr kleinen Anzahl von umsatzorientierten\, global agierenden Medienkonzernen dominiert (Gatti et al. 2025\, 14). Im Mai 2023 erklärte der Rat der Europäischen Kommission\, dass das aktuelle System des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens für öffentliche Forschungsförderer zunehmend unbezahlbar wird. Die steigenden Kosten haben global die Forderung nach einem Wechsel zu nicht gewinnorientierten Publikationsmodellen gestärkt\, siehe UNESCO Diamond Open Access Alliance\, 2024. \nImmer stärker etablieren sich Forderungen\, Diamond Open Access (DOA) Publikationsmodelle im Bereich des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens zu finanzieren\, um das aktuelle System zu transformieren und die Abhängigkeit der Wissenschaft vom kommerziellen Verlagswesen zu verringern. Die ab 2025 von der DFG geförderte Servicestelle Diamond Open Access (SeDOA) unterstützt diesen Ansatz. Zudem betont die Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina die Skalierbarkeit von nicht gewinnorientierten OA-Publikationsmodellen als entscheidender Faktor für eine erfolgreiche Transformation\, da Wissenschaftseinrichtungen mit wenigen Medienkonzernen auf dem Publikationsmarkt konkurrieren (Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina 2025\, 34). Entsprechende Finanzierungsstrukturen können die Implementierung offener Infrastrukturen und damit die gesamte Open-Research-Transformation positiv beeinflussen. \nFür den Forschungsraum Berlin-Brandenburg ist das faire und nachhaltige Finanzieren von  Open Access ein drängendes Thema (Neufend et al. 2024)\, das aufgrund der Unsicherheiten in der Finanzierung von Wissenschafts- und Kulturerbe-Einrichtungen alle Einrichtungstypen unterschiedlich betrifft. In dieser Veranstaltung möchten wir mit Akteur*innen ins Gespräch kommen\, die bereits eine nachhaltige\, faire und kollektive Finanzierung von Open Access unterstützen und ermöglichen. \nAuf dem virtuellen Podium möchten wir entlang folgender Fragen diskutieren: \n\nIst das nicht gewinnorientierte Publizieren kostengünstiger als kommerzielle APC- und BPC-Modelle?\nWelches Verständnis von Fairness ist maßgeblich für faires OA?\nWas ist der Wert und was sind die Kosten des nicht gewinnorientierten Publizierens und wie können entsprechende Ressourcen bereitgestellt werden?\nWie können einzelne Akteure im Forschungsökosystem nicht gewinnorientiertes Publizieren unterstützen?\nWas sind notwendige Finanzierungsstrukturen\, die nicht gewinnorientiertes Publizieren nach fairen Prinzipien ermöglichen?\nWas lässt sich aus einer kritischen Reflektion bisheriger großangelegter Transformationsverträge und den daraus entstandenen Kriterien lernen?\nWas sind die Alternativen zu solchen großangelegten\, kommerziellen Ansätzen im wissenschaftlichen Publizieren?
