SUMMARY:e-IRG Workshop under BE EU Presidency
DESCRIPTION:The e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG) organises two open workshops every year\, each under the auspices of the corresponding presidency of the EU Council. The Belgian EU Presidency e-IRG Workshop will be organised as a hybrid event and will bring together e-IRG stakeholders in Brussels\, Belgium\, as well as online and worldwide. The e-IRG events are official EU presidency events which will take place in the framework of the “Conference on Research Infrastructures” and the “ESFRI Forum meeting”\, similar to the Lund events under the Swedish EU presidency. \nThe overarching theme of the event will be “Sustainable e-Infrastructures for research results valorisation“\, in line with BE EU presidency topic. There will be two sessions under the Belgian e-IRG workshop: \nDay 1 – Wednesday 5 June 2024\, 13:30-15:30\nSession 1: Sustaining the role of e-Infrastructures in EOSC and beyond\nThis session aims to continue the discussions from the Valencia e-IRG Workshop and reflect on the draft RI orientation paper for WP 2025-2027 which includes the topic of sustainability of RIs\, and refers to the federation and uptake of e-Infrastructures. The session will also touch upon the concept of federation and role of e-Infrastructures in the new EOSC node-based ecosystem\, especially as e-Infrastructures are not formally part of the nodes ecosystem nor the procurement projects. The sustainability topic of RIs and e-Infrastructures is also relevant to the new ERA policy agenda for 2025-2027. \nDay 1 – Wednesday 5 June 2024\, 16:00-18:00\nSession 2: The e-Infrastructure contribution to data and research outputs valorisation\nOn of the Belgian EU Presidency topics on Research and Innovation is improving the valorisation of research results. This is key for reducing the innovation gap\, and tailoring academic research with the needs of society\, policy-makers and industries\, while stimulating the EU’s industrial recovery and revitalisation. The aim of the session is to highlight the crucial role of e-Inrastructures in this area\, spanning several layers and components\, with a cross-cuting one being the EOSC and thematic (domain-specific) or generic (domain-agnostic) data infrastructures.

SUMMARY:The WorldFAIR Webinar Series: Guidelines and Recommendations from the Case Study on Population Health
DESCRIPTION:The Implementation Network for Sharing Population Information from Research Entities (INSPIRE) project is assembling technologies and standards in support of a data hub that facilitates federated and/or shared research capable of interoperating across often-neglected low-resource settings: it aims to provide a platform-as-a-service\, which can make data of disparate types available to many different styles of analysis\, among which AI systems are increasingly prominent. \nINSPIRE uses OMOP\, a common data model that is becoming the gold standard for systematically integrating health data from disparate sources and conducting observational research at scale using routine clinical care data. However\, OMOP is not completely FAIR29 and further work is needed to improve the ability to integrate diverse sources of data. \nThis case study team will improve the interoperation of OMOP with other standards to enable machine-actionable descriptions of data structure and provenance (e.g.\, DDI-CDI\, PROV-O\, SDTL); the composition of measurements focused on the objects of research (e.g.\, I-ADOPT); record linkage modeling for creating and evaluating bridges that connect domains\, vocabularies (e.g.\, SKOS); and data discovery (e.g.\, Schema.org\, DCAT). This suite of standards forms the basis of an ‘AI-Ready’ description of data suitable for use across domain and institutional boundaries.

DESCRIPTION:Established in 2008\, European Maritime Day (EMD) is the annual EU meeting point on maritime affairs and sustainable blue growth\, and the place where ‘Ocean Leaders Meet’ as the slogan goes. It is also a public event reaching out to young people and citizens across Europe through local events. \nEMD has not only enabled many project partnerships and co-operations among stakeholders\, but it has also contributed to getting the need for sustainable management of ocean resources higher on the EU’s agenda. \nStakeholders generally find the European Maritime Day a great opportunity to touch base with strategic partners\, make new contacts and network\, get visibility for their projects\, ideas\, activities and achievements\, gain new insights into the evolving EU policy and funding landscape and provide input into European Maritime Policy formulation. \nEuropean Maritime Day takes place every year at the end of May. The conference takes place in a different EU country each year\, see the current list until 2029 below. The cities are selected following a call for interest launched by the Council of Ministers every five years. The latest call took place in 2022. \nThe call for expressions of interest for exhibitors will be launched early 2024. \nBlue-Cloud 2026 at the European Maritime Day\nBlue-Cloud 2026 will take part to the event with a workshop on Observations to knowledge: Unlocking Ocean Insights. The workshop aims to explore the intricate connection between AI technologies\, data governance\, and policymaking within marine ecosystems\, and how collaborative efforts among initiatives like Blue-Cloud\, iMagine\, SeaDataNet\, and EuroGOOS address them. In addition\, the audience can discover how they cooperate effectively to avoid duplication in efforts and enhance data quality. These discussions harness the collective expertise of the initiatives\, reinforcing their position as leaders in advancing operational oceanography for comprehensive marine knowledge. \nThe initiatives involved\, fully or partially funded by the EC\, gather data from European research infrastructures that cover diverse European countries and sea-basins. Moreover\, the initiatives foster a shared commitment to advancing technology\, sustainability\, and economic resilience in the maritime domain\, contributing to the overarching goals of the EU in this sector.

While retaining the advantages of the hybrid format\, including the ability to allow participation from remote locations\, we will be able to hold more full-fledged face-to-face discussion. I hope that many of the participants will come to the venue to meet face to face and engage in a frank exchange of ideas and opinions. The JpGU is an organization of about 10\,000 individual members and about 50 domestic society members related to Earth and planetary sciences. \nFAIR-EASE at JpGU\nProject coordinator Alessandro Rizzo (IRD) and Jerome Detoc (Ifremer) will give an oral presentation on FAIR Earth and environmental sciences: challenges and opportunities for improving FAIR principles across-domains. SUMMARY:Natural Scientific Language Processing and Research Knowledge Graphs
DESCRIPTION:The Extended Semantic Web Conference is a major venue for discussing the latest scientific results and technology innovations around semantic technologies. Building on its past success\, ESWC is seeking to broaden its focus to span other relevant related research areas in which Web semantics plays an important role. \nThe goal of the Semantic Web is to create a Web of knowledge and services in which the semantics of content is made explicit and content is linked to both other content and services allowing novel applications to combine content from heterogeneous sites in unforeseen ways and support enhanced matching between users needs and content. This network of knowledge-based functionality will weave together a large network of human knowledge\, and make this knowledge machine-processable to support intelligent behaviour by machines. Creating such an interlinked Web of knowledge which spans unstructured text\, structured data  as well as multimedia content and services requires the collaboration of many disciplines\, including but not limited to: Artificial Intelligence\, Natural Language Processing\, Databases and Information Systems\, Information Retrieval\, Machine Learning\, Multimedia\, Distributed Systems\, Social Networks\, Web Engineering\, and Web Science. These complementarities are reflected in the outline of the technical program of the ESWC 2024. ESWC 2024 will present the latest results in research\, technologies and applications in its field. DESCRIPTION:The EOSC Federation Handbook will comprehensively address the purpose\, structure\, governance\, architecture and operations of the EOSC Federation.\nThe Tripartite Group\, which has the remit within the EOSC Partnership’s Tripartite Governance to steer the community development of the EOSC Federation\, has endorsed EOSC-A to continue to lead the community-wide co-creation of the EOSC Federation Handbook. \nThe decisions taken by the EOSC Tripartite Governance on the EOSC Federation will be reflected in the Handbook\, which will through this process of iteration become the reference document for the operation of the EOSC Federation. \nThe EOSC Federation Handbook will be written collaboratively with open consultations\, meetings\, events and sprints. \n  \nThe planning and events during 2024 that will impact the drafting process\, include:\n\nTripartite Events and Tripartite Group meetings preparing for the post-2027 governance of the EOSC Federation\nMilestones in the deployment of the EOSC EU Node\n27-28 May 2024\nThe 8th General Assembly of the EOSC Association will include consultation sessions with the membership on the preliminary draft\nJune 2024\nWriting of the draft EOSC Federation handbook starts\n05 July 2024\nDiscussion of preliminary draft at EOSC Partnership Board meeting #6\nSeptember 2024\nFirst consultation meetings take place to facilitate revision of handbook\n21-23 October 2024\nThe EOSC Symposium 2024 in Berlin\, where a mature draft of the EOSC Federation handbook will be presented\nNovember 2024\nEuropean Tripartite Meeting\, where the mature draft will be presented for endorsement
