DESCRIPTION:This presentation highlights cOAlition S\, an initiative dedicated to making full and immediate Open Access to research publications a reality. The Executive Director of cOAlition S\, Johan Rooryck will briefly present the work of cOAlition S in the last five years and subsequently present the plans that cOAlition S is currently preparing for the next five years\, pending approval of the cOAlition S Leaders’ Group. Since 2016\, Rooryck has served as co-editor-in-chief of the Diamond Open Access journal Glossa: A Journal of General Linguistics. This journal transitioned to Diamond Open Access when its Editorial Team and Board\, as well as its reader and author community\, decided to abandon the Elsevier-owned journal Lingua to found Diamond OA Glossa. Rooryck is a member of the Academia Europaea\, a doctor honoris causa of the Arctic University of Norway (UiT)\, and a visiting professor at Leiden University\, where he was chair of French linguistics from 1993 to 2020.

SUMMARY:Shaping the Future of Cultural Heritage: “Connecting the Cultural Heritage Cloud with the common European data space for cultural heritage and the European Open Science Cloud”
DESCRIPTION:The Cultural Heritage Cloud – or European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) – is a European Union initiative to create a digital infrastructure that will connect cultural heritage researchers and professionals across the EU. It will develop specific digital collaborative tools for the sector while removing barriers for smaller and remote institutions. The goal is to help cultural heritage institutions\, research organisations and other professional organisations of all kinds and sizes to work with their digital objects in a more visible\, interconnected\, harmonised\, and informed way\, to successfully cope with the challenges the digital transition poses to the sector and seize its opportunities. The Cultural Heritage Cloud will add a new digital dimension to cultural heritage preservation\, conservation\, restoration and enhancement by providing cutting-edge technologies\, for instance for the digitization of artefacts or for researching artworks. The implementation of this initiative has now begun with the EU-funded project ECHOES – European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science\, which started on the 1 of June 2024. \nTwo other initiatives are currently running at European level: \n\nfunded by the Digital Europe programme\, the common European data space for cultural heritage is an EU flagship initiative to accelerate the digital transformation of the sector and foster creation\, access and reuse of heritage data.\nThe vision for the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is to put in place a system for researchers in Europe to store\, share\, process\, analyse\, and reuse data within and across disciplines and borders.\n\nIn this webinar\, we’ll learn more about the Cloud and two other European initiatives\, and how they are interconnected and complementary\, how these initiatives interact with the Cloud\, and what the added value of such connections is for the cultural heritage community.

DESCRIPTION:In the context of its role in the Tripartite Group\, EOSC-A is leading on the drafting of the EOSC Federation Handbook\, which will comprehensively address the purpose\, structure\, governance\, architecture and operations of the EOSC Federation. \nThe EOSC Federation Handbook is being written collaboratively with weekly meetings of the writers and monthly meetings with the reviewers and the Tripartite Group. \nThe first three chapters of the EOSC Federation Handbook addressing\, respectively\, the “Purpose”\, “Governance and legal framework”\, and “Operational structure and responsibilities” of the EOSC Federation have been drafted following this process\, and will be made available for a community consultation from 16-26 September 2024. \nThe results of this consultation will be presented at the EOSC Symposium 2024 in Berlin and integrated into the initial chapters of the Handbook\, which will be submitted for endorsement at November’s European Tripartite meeting.

DESCRIPTION:The annual Fisheries Science Seminar\, organised by the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries will take place on 25 September 2024. This year’s seminar will focus on the potential contribution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) towards achieving fisheries sustainability. \nThe 2024 science seminar will be dedicated to exploring the rapid developments in the area of artificial intelligence to support the scientific process\, and in particular how this approach can be instrumental towards sustainable fisheries management with increased transparency of fishing activity and reduced impact on the environment. \nThe seminar will include presentations from experts in the field followed by discussions involving seminar’s participants. DESCRIPTION:Research is being transformed by (new) AI applications. But what happens when we aim to make science more open? Can artificial intelligence help us achieve that? \nOn the afternoon of Monday\, September 23rd\, the Netherlands Commission for Unesco and the Unesco Chair on Diversity and Inclusion in Global Science (Leiden University) will host a workshop on AI and Open Science. The event will focus specifically on engaging societal stakeholders. How can AI applications enable a broader public to become involved in the research process? Can artificial intelligence help launch citizen science projects or enhance scientific volunteerism? \nThe workshop will be held in Leiden at the Pieter de la Court Building\, room 5A.42. SUMMARY:Future Engagement Model for the EOSC Federation (2024) (HORIZON-INFRA-2024-EOSC-02)
DESCRIPTION:The work of this CSA should build on the (federation) services offered by the European Commission’s EOSC Core Platform and provide feedback and input for the evolution of the EOSC Core Services and the EOSC Exchange to ensure a wider uptake. In this context\, the CSA will also assist with the update and promotion of the EOSC Interoperability Framework and assist in the set-up a process for its updates. \n\nThe CSA should execute at least two use cases to demonstrate and promote the use of the federation services provided by the EOSC Core Platform (EU Node) and document the experience and lessons learned. The use cases should be driven by real-life user needs and consider the long-term sustainability of such federations. The use cases should include Research Infrastructures able to federate within EOSC and users which gain novel capabilities for their research work.\nThrough the outcomes of the use cases\, the CSA should propose to the EC and current EOSC governance a set of operational Rules of Participation and common set of policies and minimum requirements to be applied consistently across the EOSC federation.\nThis set of rules\, policies and requirements should be detailed in such a way they can be introduced in the operation of ESFRI\, ERICs and other international\, national or institutional RIs at the subdomain\, domain and interdisciplinary levels as concerns the EOSC federation.\nThey should be developed\, maintained\, and updated in accordance with the progressive deployment of the EOSC Core\, EOSC Exchange and EOSC sustainability models and be based on latest input by the Task Forces of the EOSC Association and any additional\, relevant input by the research community.\n\nScope: \nProposals are expected to cover the following activities: \nThe CSA should explore concrete use cases of federations of Research Infrastructures and data/service providers to the EOSC Core Platform (EU Node). The CSA should contribute to the further evolution of the Rules of Participation and Acceptable Use Policies based on the identification of specific commitments and needs of the different contributors of the EOSC federation\, and contribute to the related development of guidelines and recommendations on various aspects (incl. interoperability framework)\, and with this further promote the EOSC Core Platform (EU Node). This work should be done in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders\, such as the contractors providing the Managed Services for the European Open Science Platform (EU Node)[1] \, Research Infrastructures\, thematic EOSC communities and EOSC national nodes. \nTo this end\, the CSA should engage with and further build the EOSC federation community\, and assist in the development of a common framework on the various aspects of the federation\, including the following dimensions: \n\nLegal\nBusiness model and incentive structure\nInteroperability framework\, including the support for FAIR principle and handling of PIDs across EOSC federation\nEOSC Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure\nEOSC Security Coordination\nEOSC Rules of Participation.\n\nCoordination and collaboration with the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC) is required in order to take stock of identified common data infrastructure requirements\, including technologies\, processes\, standards\, and tools that will allow reuse of data across the various data spaces \nAlso\, synergies should be established with the contractors of SIMPL[2] as foreseen in the latter’s procurement technical specifications\, to avoid duplicating efforts and funding among major Union initiatives. The CSA should further provide an analysis of the status quo including the identification of gaps\, on the basis of which an actionable roadmap shall be established with actions differentiated by main actors and levels (EU or national\, topical or cross-cutting). \nThe proposed work should incorporate the necessary coordination efforts and resources with other relevant projects and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) governance structure in the context of the EOSC partnership. \n[1]Managed Services for the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Platform \n[2]Smart middleware that will enable cloud-to-edge federations and support all major data initiatives funded by the European Commission

DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThis event\, presented by the Open Science Thematic Group and sponsored by Digital Science\, will explore Open Science in a global context. Considering the geopolitical landscape and consequent security concerns and regulations\, the event will provide a forum for dialogue on how to negotiate the policy gap(s) between open science and global security\, the issue of ‘dual use’\, and look at tools to assist this process. \nFurther\, the event will look at the impact of Open Science for lower income countries\, and whether the advantages – enhanced access to publications\, increased collaboration – outweigh the costs and work effort required of research communities in these often-under-resourced jurisdictions. It will explore how funder mandates and publishing models can both assist and challenge progress\, and showcase how cross-jurisdictional support can aid progress. \nProgramme Points\nDay 01 of the event aims to address multiple goals\, including identifying key security regulations and recommendations\, enhancing awareness and education for research managers and administrators\, and fostering ongoing dialogue to adapt Open Science principles in the current geopolitical landscape. The session will help participants to: \n\n1. Understand the relevance of the new geopolitical landscape in applying the Open Science principles in research.\n2. Discuss the EU Council’s recommendations for enhancing research security and its intersection with Open Science with an emphasise on the need for awareness and education among research managers\, administrators\, researchers\, and other stakeholders.\n3. Discuss best practices like “as open as possible\, as closed as necessary\,” FAIR principles\, and various funding models with particular knowledge exchange on the federative nature of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).\n4. Explore policy gaps and identify the best compliance tools to ensure robust implementation of Open Science.\n\nDay 02 will explore the advantages of Open Science for lower income countries\, such as enhanced access to publications\, heightened collaboration prospects\, and expanded audiences\, while also providing consideration of whether the expectations placed on researchers and research institutions in these regions to reciprocate these practices might pose disadvantages and potentially prohibitive costs. Sarah Jones served as a member of the EOSC Association Board of Directors since 2021 until her passing in 2023.\n\n\nShe was also an esteemed member of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) Council and the RDA Technical Advisory Board. The annual award honours Sarah’s memory and her significant contributions to the Open Science community globally. You can read more about Sarah’s life and career on her EOSC-A webpage. \nNominations\nThe RDA invites nominations for the Sarah Jones Award for individuals who have demonstrated an exceptional contribution to fostering collaboration in Open Science. The deadline for nominations is Thursday\, 12 September 2024. \nThe impact the nominated individual has made can be on an organisational\, community or individual level. The award is open to all nominees and not restricted to members of the RDA community\, however a demonstration of contribution within the RDA community is of great importance. \nThe winner will be announced during the 23rd RDA Plenary Meeting between 12-14 November 2024 in Costa Rica and will receive a physical award\, a certificate\, and be included on the RDA Sarah Jones Award website listing with details of the exceptional contribution. Finally\, the winner will have access to a fund to be invested in activities relevant to the winning activities. \nDonations\nThe RDA is accepting donations to the fund for the Sarah Jones Award 2024. SUMMARY:Open Consultation: Crafting a vision for European Repositories
DESCRIPTION:In January 2023\, OpenAIRE\, LIBER\, SPARC Europe\, and COAR unveiled a joint strategy to strengthen the European repository network. This aim is to further strengthen the open science landscape in Europe by reinforcing and enhancing repositories across Europe by emphasizing their value\, spreading best practices\, and supporting the establishment of national networks. \nOpen Consultation – European Repository Strategy\nAs the first step\, a comprehensive survey of the European repository landscape was conducted from February to March 2023. The survey revealed that European repositories collectively acquire\, preserve\, and provide open access to tens\, if not hundreds\, of millions of valuable research outputs\, serving as critical\, non-profit infrastructure in the European open science landscape. However\, the survey also identified several areas needing improvement. \nSpecifically\, repositories face three primary challenges: \n\nMaintaining up-to-date\, highly functional software platforms.\nImplementing consistent and comprehensive best practices in metadata\, preservation\, and usage statistics.\nAchieving appropriate visibility in the scholarly ecosystem.\n\nCrafting a Vision for European Repositories\nBased on these findings\, it was agreed to prepare a position paper outlining our collective vision for the future of repositories in Europe. To achieve this\, we are seeking input from various communities to gather insights and feedback. This open consultation is specifically designed to collect input from a variety of stakeholder communities\, and your participation is vital. \nWe can’t do it alone—we need YOUR insights and feedback to shape this vision. \n\nGive us your input\n\nYour valuable contributions will help to inform the initial draft of the position paper\, which will be refined through focus groups. Together\, we can build a stronger\, more connected European repository network.

SUMMARY:Guidelines for creating a user tailored EOSC Compliant PID Policy - D3.3 - Open for comments
DESCRIPTION:The Guidelines for creating a user tailored EOSC Compliant PID Policy (D3.3) formulates 16 guidelines for helping PID Managers to formulate an EOSC compliant PID policy. \nThe main source for the guidelines are the outcomes of the compliance assessment of the EOSC PID policy. Other sources of best practice are a review of national and institutional PID policies\, outputs and recommendations of the Research Data Alliance (RDA)\, review of PID Stack documentation and published use of PIDs in workflows and specific use cases. \nThe results provided by the report are relevant for all actors in the PID Ecosystem\, such as PID Service Providers\, PID Owners\, PID Authorities and PID Standards Bodies. The main target group\, however\, are PID Managers\, who have the responsibility to maintain the integrity of the relationship between entities and their PIDs. PID Managers may include a provider of a data repository\, a data catalogue\, or a research workflow system. \nThis deliverable is opened for the external community review as well as review in the ongoing FAIR-IMPACT support programme Creating EOSC compliant Persistent Identifier (PID) policies. SUMMARY:Expedition Zukunft START 2024/2
DESCRIPTION:In der Ausschreibung Expedition Zukunft START werden Vorhaben in einer frühen Phase angesprochen\, in der Innovationen vorbereitet und die Basis für große Veränderungen in Märkten\, Technologien oder Gesellschaften gelegt werden. \nFolgende Projektarten werden als vorbereitende Maßnahmen für FTI-Projekte unterstützt: \n(1) Anwendungsfälle für eine vorhandene Technologie\nEs existiert bereits eine vorhandene technologische Lösung\, aber es ist unklar\, wie diese vorhandene Technologie am Markt angewendet werden kann bzw. welches Geschäftsmodell passt. Im Projekt können konkrete Anwendungsfälle erarbeitet und getestet werden. Am Ende steht die Erkenntnis\, für welche Anwendungsfälle die technologische Lösung relevant ist und in welche F&E-Aktivitäten investiert werden soll. \n(2) Ursachenanalyse \nEs liegt ein konkretes und ungelöstes Problem vor\, wobei die Ursachen nicht klar oder ausreichend untersucht sind. Förderbare Vorhaben analysieren dieses Problem im Detail und erkennen relevante Akteure. Die Probleme können einen technologischen Charakter oder aber gesellschaftliche Ursachen haben. Wichtig ist\, dass auf Basis der Ergebnisse potenziell ein FTI-Projekt entsteht. \n(3) Ausarbeitung und Erprobung eines technischen Konzepts\nEs existieren technische Ideen\, deren Lösungskonzept noch ausgearbeitet\, überprüft oder entwickelt werden muss. Dies umfasst auch den Bau erster Prototypen\, um die Validität von Konzepten und Machbarkeit zu testen. Wir unterstützen risikoreiche Konzepte\, ausgefallene Ideen und technische Lösungsansätze für große\, ungeklärte Probleme. Wichtig ist\, dass naturwissenschaftliche Gesetze eingehalten werden. \n(4) Strategie und Umsetzungsplanung großer Veränderungsprozesse\nViele disruptive und radikale Innovationen starten mit vagen Ideen\, denen zur Umsetzung oftmals eine strukturierte Herangehensweise fehlt. Daher werden hier Vorhaben unterstützt\, die als Vorbereitung für FTI-Projekte die Strategie und Vision\, sowie einen Innovationsprozess entwickeln. Entsprechend der strategischen Zielsetzung von Expedition Zukunft ist ein Prozess gemeint\, der über den herkömmlichen Strategieprozess von Organisationen hinausgeht und ambitionierte\, globale Ziele ins Auge fasst: zB solche\, die große Veränderungen in Märkten oder bei Zielgruppen vorbereiten\, regulatorische Hürden ansprechen oder große technologische Umbrüche strategisch steuern. \nWie hoch ist die Förderung?\nDie Unterstützung im Rahmen von Expedition Zukunft START erfolgt auf maximal 12 Monate und Projektkosten werden mit einem maximalen Zuschuss in der Höhe von € 80.000\,- gefördert. \nFür verschiedene Organisationen sind verschiedene Maximalanteile am Projektvolumen förderbar\, und zwar: \n\nKleine Unternehmen: 70 %\nMittlere Unternehmen: 60 %\nForschungseinrichtungen: 80 %\n\nZusätzlich zur monetären Unterstützung begleitet Sie die FFG über die Förderung hinaus mit einer zentralen Ansprechperson und individuell auf das Vorhaben angepassten Services.
