SUMMARY:National Open Science Festival 2024 at Maastricht University
DESCRIPTION:Maastricht University (UM) will be the venue for the National Open Science Festival on 22 October 2024 at the School of Business and Economics (SBE). Since the founding of Open Science NL\, it has taken over the organisation of the festival and made an annual budget available for it. However\, the National Open Science Festival is truly a festival for and by the community. The organising committee of the 2024 edition comprises staff from UM\, Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS)\, National Coordination Point Research Data Management (LCRDM) and Open Science NL. Additionally\, a programme committee reflecting the broad Open Science community is currently being formed. Read more about this event on the website of Open Science NL. \nRegistration\nThe opening of registration will be announced via the Open Science NL website and newsletter\, as well as via DANS\, LCRDM\, UM and OSCNL. Furthermore\, the National Open Science Festival will once again feature its own website\, offering people the opportunity to sign up as presenters for programme components or register as visitors. \nThe importance of Open Science at UM\nThe aim of Open Science is to strengthen collaboration\, both among individual researchers and between other parties and scientists. Open Science makes research more transparent\, controllable\, faster\, more efficient\, reproducible and more sustainable. The idea is that civil society organisations\, patient organisations\, companies and other organisations can all benefit from easy access to scientific research. DESCRIPTION:The EOSC Symposium will take place in Berlin from October 21-23\, 2024. NFDI is the mandated organisation for Germany in the EOSC Association and is a partner at the EOSC Symposium. \nNFDI would like to use this opportunity for exchange in Germany and is therefore organising a side event together with EOSC on October 23-24\, 2024. \nThe objective of the side event is to demonstrate the intertwined developments and communities of NFDI and EOSC. It is intended to provide a framework for participants from EOSC and NFDI to address and discuss common topics and facilitate mutual understanding. Presentations\, panel discussions and sufficient time for exchange are planned. Additionally\, an interactive format will be provided with the planned world café. \nWe are pleased to be able to allocate some additional places due to changes in room capacities. SUMMARY:Call for candidates for four EOSC-A Director positions
DESCRIPTION:The call for candidates for four EOSC-A Board of Director positions has been launched for the 2024 elections\, which will take place during the 9th General Assembly of the EOSC Association. GA#9 is an online meeting to be held 22 November 2024. The terms of three EOSC-A Directors are concluding (with one of these eligible to stand for re-election)\, and a fourth vacancy has arisen prematurely due to the December 2023 passing of Director Sarah Jones. Sarah’s position will initially be filled on a one-year interim basis. \nMembers interested in potentially serving on the Board for either four years (one + three) or six years (three + three) are encouraged to apply for both the three-year and one-year term options. Currently there is a need for Directors with specific skills\, including political insight\, policy expertise\, and relevant technological know-how\, which would best serve to continue the ongoing work of the Board. Program committee member Hannah Mihai explains: \n“This year\, we have worked to reflect the significant overlap between our fields in the structure of our conference program. None of our fields stand entirely alone\, and we need each other’s expertise. SUMMARY:Consultation on the EOSC Federation Handbook
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to share with you the draft of the first three chapters of the EOSC Federation Handbook. \nThe writing of the text has been coordinated by the EOSC Association and supported by the EOSC Focus project\, following the task assigned by the Tripartite Group (a sub-group of the EOSC Partnership’s Tripartite Governance) to draft “a single reference document describing the EOSC Federation\, its operational structure and responsibilities\, its legal and governance framework\, and its technical operations”. \nThe first version of the EOSC Federation Handbook covers the build-up phase of the Federation in 2025 and 2026. The first three chapters describe the purpose\, initial governance and organisational structure of the Federation. \nAlso in preparation\, but not yet completed\, are chapters 4\, 5 and 6\, to be developed and released for consultation in the coming months. These chapters will address operational aspects\, services and policies of the EOSC Federation\, and the chapter outlines are included in the present consultation. \nOnce completed\, the first iteration of the Handbook will serve as a guide for the initial implementation of EOSC Nodes and the Federation as a whole. \nThe deadline to provide feedback on the first three chapters of the EOSC Federation Handbook is 31 October 2024 (23:59 CET).

SUMMARY:Marine User Days Conference
DESCRIPTION:The EUMETSAT Marine User Days will bring together existing and prospective users from across the diverse marine user community. Focusing on the data provided by the European organisations involved in the Copernicus programme and their role in oceanography and marine applications\, the event will act as a showcase for use cases. It is also a networking opportunity for users across the value chain\, and will feature a workshop to engage with user needs and feedback. \nEmphasis will be placed on data from across the value chain including satellite data\, derived products\, climate data records and their applications. Copernicus contributing mission data from EUMETSAT’s meteorological missions and data from the satellite application facility specialising in ocean and sea ice will broaden the scope. \nThe Marine User Days will be open to participation from across the community including those involved at the policy and governance level\, academia and research and commercial entities.  Attendees will benefit from the opportunity to present their use cases to the wider community of users and potential customers\, but also to the European Commission and Copernicus entrusted entity representatives. They will have to opportunity to discuss their use cases and needs with the latter.

DESCRIPTION:The Blue-Cloud 2026 team is gathering for its 4th General Assembly (GA) meeting and Technical and Scientific Committee (TSC) meeting\, which takes place at the Instituto Hidrográfico in Lisbon\, Portugal\, from 5 to 8 November 2024. This meeting offers the consortium a valuable opportunity to reflect on the progress made over the first two years of the project and to plan the upcoming activities necessary for the successful implementation of Blue-Cloud. \nAs part of the event\, the Blue-Cloud team also hosts the 1st Federation Workshop. The workshop aims to evaluate Blue-Cloud’s federated services in relation to the needs and challenges of other marine and climate research infrastructures. SUMMARY:Blue-Cloud first federation workshop
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Overview\nThe Blue-Cloud Horizon Europe project is introducing a federated model where Blue research infrastructures (RIs) and other data and service infrastructures and technological providers make their services available to the community via agreed\, FAIR formats and technology that the Open Science Community in Europe (under the umbrella of EOSC) recommends or accepts. \nThe Blue-Cloud collaborative environment allows researchers to retrieve marine data\, exploit them in the VRE\, access distributed cloud resources\, exploit analytical services and interdisciplinary Virtual Labs. Blue-Cloud is offering e-infrastructure services (computing\, storage\, analytics\, SSO\, AAI\, generic service)\, a data discovery service (10M+ datasets and products from European marine infrastructures such as EMODnet\, SeaDataNet\, Copernicus\, Ecotaxa and others)\, and research-intensive virtual labs\, embedded in a Virtual Research Environment open to any users with federated identity to the marine research community in Europe (and beyond). \nIn this workshop\, we aim at assessing Blue-Cloud federated services towards the needs and challenges of other research infrastructures active in marine and climate research\, ultimately stimulating a debate around the impact of open science federation in practice. \nWho is this workshop for\nThe Blue-Cloud first federation workshop is by invitation. DESCRIPTION:The BMBF-funded project open-access.network invites you to an information event as part of the information series “Shaping the Open Access transformation sustainably. Diamond OA as an alternative”: \nFair Open Access Funds – What libraries can do to promote Diamond Open Access \nWednesday\, 6 November 2024 | 1pm – 2:15 pm (CET) | online | The event is held in English. \nAs both subscription and publication costs for scientific journals and monographs continue to rise\, there is much discussion about Diamond Open Access as an alternative funding option. But how can academic libraries support Diamond Open Access? One approach is to create seperate publication funds for Fair Open Acccess. In Fair Open Access\, the focus is primarily on supporting publishing infrastructures and academic initiatives in order to strenghten scholar-led publishing. The Fair Open Access Alliance (FOAA) has outlined five key principles that journals must adhere to in order to qualify as Fair Open Access. These include: 1) being led by the academic community\, 2) ensuring that authors retain the copyright to their work\, 3) providing immediate and unrestricted Open Access to all content\, 4) separating submission and publication from mandatory fees\, and 5) maintaining low\, transparent\, and proportionate costs for any necessary fees. To support Fair Open Access initiatives\, some university libraries allocate dedicated financial resources through Fair Open Access funds: \nDemmy Verbeke will introduce the KU Leuven Fund for Fair Open Access\, which is dedicated to promoting a cost-effective and sustainable implementation of Open Science. The fund supports the development of new publishing models\, as well as Open Science initiatives and infrastructures\, with the goal of steering away from expensive\, for-profit business models and empowering scholars to regain control of the publishing process. \nMichaela Voigt  will talk about the Technische Universität (TU) Berlin and its University Library which will launch a Fair Open Access Fund in 2024. to further expand the existing support for Open Access. DESCRIPTION:Cultural Heritage collections are essential knowledge infrastructures that provide a solid representation of the historical background of human communities. These knowledge infrastructures are constructed from and integrate cultural information derived from diverse memory institutions\, mainly libraries\, archives and museums. Each individual community has spent a lot of effort in order to develop\, support and promote its own systems\, tools and metadata for the management of cultural information\, mainly related to its particular resources and use. \nIn this framework\, the management of the cultural information has to deal with challenges related to (i) metadata modeling\, specification\, standardization\, extraction\, (semantic) enrichment\, mapping\, integration\, effective use\, and evaluation\, (ii) knowledge representation as conceptualization to provide the context for unambiguously interpreting metadata\, and (iii) information integration from different contexts for the provision of integrated access\, reuse and advanced services to users. \nAt the same time\, there are also inter-domain efforts targeted to semantically align data (research data\, educational data\, public sector information etc.) to cultural information. New challenges are also emerged from the need to incorporate cultural information into the new publication paradigms\, where a variety of resources (data\, metadata\, processes\, results\, etc.) are linked and integrated\, providing better shareability and reusability. Currently\, Linked (Open) Data\, as part of the Semantic Web Technology\, is having a major role in modernizing cultural heritage collections. Providing to users the possibility to re-use and integrate data into their own systems is currently more than a need\, given that transparency and access to information is a prerequisite. A critical factor to the effectiveness of many aspects of all the above efforts is the quality of metadata\, as interpreted by its context and use and evaluated by the proper measures and methods. Many institutions and aggregate infrastructures are dealing with the poor quality of metadata that inevitably results in poor integration\, search and reuse\, while their enrichment\, in terms of contextualization\, co-referencing\, alignment\, etc.\, is really challenging. \nThe aim of this Special Track is to maintain a dialogue where researchers and practitioners working on all the aspects of the cultural information will come together and exchange ideas about open issues at all stages of the cultural heritage information life cycle. The track also welcomes works related to semantics and applications for new approaches to cultural information publication and sharing\, as well as to interlinking to other datasets published in the Semantic Web universe.

DESCRIPTION:Help us develop model contractual terms for data sharing and standard contractual clauses for switching between data processing services (cloud computing contracts) by sharing your opinion. \n\n\n\nBefore the Data Act starts applying from 12 September 2025\, the Commission will recommend model contractual terms for data access and use and standard contractual clauses for cloud computing. The Commission has set up an Expert Group to develop these models\, which will form the basis for the Commission Recommendation in 2025. These models intend to help especially small and medium-size companies and other organisations which may lack resources to draft and negotiate fair contractual clauses for data sharing or for cloud computing. \nIn November and December 2024\, the Commission will be hosting a series of 6 webinars with businesses\, policymakers\, lawyers\, and experts to discuss the development of both the draft Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) for cloud computing contracts and the draft Model Contractual Terms (MCTs) for data sharing. \nThe webinars are open to Member State authorities\, companies\, lawyers\, professors\, and organisations. As in previous years\, we will have a program that will last two days. It is planned to hold technical workshops\, flash talk sessions and posters for demonstration and presentations of projects and good practices\, a coffee with Data and even discussion panels. \nThe GDI Forum’s annual event aims to bring together and energize the community of professionals and researchers involved in activities to support research data management with the aim of developing technical skills\, capitalizing on knowledge and practices and promoting knowledge about national initiatives. \nIt is a  training and debate space for sharing ideas\, emerging initiatives\, projects and good practices to support research data management  that seeks to bring together managers of digital repositories and data centers\, information technicians\, libraries\, archives and data curation\, IT specialists\, researchers\, data scientists and science managers at research institutions and science funding bodies.

DESCRIPTION:The 9th EOSC Association General Assembly will take place online on Friday\, 22 November 2024. The virtual meeting gives you the opportunity to conveniently join us from your preferred location\, to vote on decision items\, and to contribute to critical discussions that impact the direction of EOSC-A. \nNotably\, we anticipate that four Board of Directors positions will be filled at GA#9 via direct election by the EOSC-A membership. This represents a significant turnover of the EOSC-A leadership at a critical time in EOSC’s development\, and we encourage all qualified Members to strongly consider enrolling as candidates. A formal Call for Candidates\, detailing the roles and responsibilities\, requirements and process will be issued on 03 September. \nPlease mark your calendars for GA#9\, and stay tuned for more details. SUMMARY:RDA TIGER Cross-Fertilisation Webinar Series – Semantic Interoperability
DESCRIPTION:RDA TIGER is pleased to announce an upcoming series of webinars on cross-fertilisation and knowledge-sharing between RDA Working Groups across different domains. Each of the three webinars will be thematically focused\, allowing WGs to share their work with peers and identify shared challenges and opportunities for further collaboration. \n\n\nWe’re inviting anyone with an interest in the specific activities of RDA Working Groups\, in the topics and themes to be discussed\, or in the planned outcomes of these Working Groups to join us for this series\, where there will be an opportunity to ask about any aspects of the WGs’ activities. \n\nREGISTER\n\nWebinar #1 – Semantic Interoperability \n\n\nThe first of the series will take place on Wednesday 27th November at 09:30 UTC and will focus on the theme of ‘Semantic Interoperability’. Presenting at the webinar will be the co-chairs of the FAIR Mappings WG\, the Alignment of Multilingual Vocabularies in the Social Sciences and Humanities WG\, and the InteroperAble Descriptions of Observable Property Terminology (I-ADOPT) WG. \n\n\n\nThe FAIR Mappings WG\, which is in the final stages of RDA Council endorsement\, will present its preliminary work so far\, focusing on the various communities and the RDA WGs which have generated mappings\, with the aim to converge toward common guidelines to make different types of mappings FAIR\, and a common machine-readable/actionable set of representations of the mappings beyond the capabilities of the current existing specifications.\nThe Alignment of Multilingual Vocabularies in the Social Sciences and Humanities WG\, which has been endorsed by RDA Council and has recently started its regular meeting schedule\, will present on how it intends to address challenges concerning the interoperability multilingual nature of SSH controlled vocabularies by providing collectively approved recommendations for creating\, extending\, updating\, and aligning multilingual vocabularies in the SSH.\nThe I-ADOPT WG is currently working to to embed the I-ADOPT framework in existing standards to demonstrate its capability in promoting interoperability\, also seeking examples of the I-ADOPT framework in different scientific areas. The WG is planning a close collaboration with the FAIR Mappings WG in its planned activities\, demonstrating the potential impact that collaboration within RDA can have.\n\n\n\nFuture instalments of the series will take place in December 2024 on the topics of (Meta)Data Standards and FAIR/CARE/TRUST Principles Adoption.
