SUMMARY:2025 EUA Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:While sustainability is about building a better future\, resilience is about overcoming internal and external challenges. Crucially\, both elements are needed for universities to succeed in today’s world. \nThe 2025 EUA Annual Conference\, hosted by the University of Latvia in Riga from 10-11 April\, will strive to define what sustainability and resilience\, as multi-faceted concepts\, mean for universities. By ‘Connecting the dots on sustainability and resilience’\, this event will explore how universities can contribute to a more sustainable future\, both on and off campus\, while strengthening institutional and societal resilience. So\, how can university leadership and communities best pursue sustainability and resilience as key objectives of institutional missions\, strategies and activities? \nTo reflect on this\, the 2025 Annual Conference will explore what sustainability means from the point of view of funding\, digitalisation\, academic careers and university leadership. Sessions will also shine a spotlight on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, showcasing how they can be put into action by universities. At the same time\, participants will reflect on how institutions can become resilient without turning inwards on themselves\, in sessions dedicated to knowledge security and inclusion.

SUMMARY:Open Science – Chance oder Herausforderung?
\nProgramm

SUMMARY:Introducing OSTrails: Your Companion to Streamline Planning\, Tracking\, and Assessing Research Practices
DESCRIPTION:This session is an introduction to the OSTrails project\, aimed at informing the broader research community of its main objectives and preliminary results\, and involving them in the co-creation of its foundational Plan-Track-Assess (PTA) Framework. \nLimited interoperability across the research stages\, inconsistent practices between Research Data Management (RDM) services and varying Open Science maturing levels across countries and scientific domains\, hinder collaboration and scientific progress. OSTrails addresses this challenge by creating a collection of open\, reusable\, and adaptable resources that collectively enable seamless information exchange among Data Management Planning (DMP) Platforms\, Scientific Knowledge Graphs (SKGs) and FAIR Assessment Tools. This approach empowers research communities to mor effectively manage\, share\, and evaluate their outputs research. \nIn this webinar\, Elli Papadopoulou from ARC (Deputy Project Coordinator) will introduce how the PTA Framework is defined and used within the project\, to enable interoperability\, connectivity and machine actionability. \nTwo of the 24 OSTrails pilot initiatives will be featured to demonstrate how project solutions are being co-created and implemented in national and domain-specific settings. \n\nAndrew Hoffman (Leiden University) and Eileen Waegemaekers (SURF) will showcase the Dutch National Pilot\, highlighting how dynamic\, workflow-integrated DMPs support collaboration and knowledge sharing across institutions.\n\n\nRenaud Duyme (ESRF)\, representing PaNoSC\, will present a use case\, illustrating the use of DMPs\, SKGs\, and FAIR evaluation for datasets from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.\n\nThe webinar marks also the launch of our OSTrails Mentorship Programme\, presented by Pedro Principe (UMinho). He will inform about how the programme is structured and run to support IT infrastructure managers\, Research support staff and Funders’ support officers advance their skills and deepen their expertise in DMPs\, SKGs and FAIR assessment using the OSTrails Toolkit. Participants selected through the Open Call for Mentees will benefit from personalised guidance by experts across the OSTrails consortium. \nThe webinar will conclude with a live Q&A session. \n*This session will be recorded and made available through the organiser’s official ch

SUMMARY:CoARA's Second Call for Cascade Funding
DESCRIPTION:Summary of the Call\n\nThis call for Cascade Funding aims to enhance institutional change and target pilot and exchange-of-knowledge initiatives. It will fund +20 projects facilitating knowledge-exchange\, piloting new initiatives within institutions\, and enabling lasting institutional change. As such\, it encourages and supports research organisations to investigate and test what will efficiently work ‘in real life’. \nMore specifically\, the first call aims to: \n\nFacilitate the exchange\, transfer and adaptation of proven good practices and their adoption in research organisations.\nCatalyse the set-up or transformation of research assessment practices and tools in line with the commitments of the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment.\nSupport the development and testing of new and innovative research assessment approaches\, models and procedures.\n\nProjects can be proposed by any of the organisation types specified below through a cascading grant mechanism. By the end of the programme\, it is expected to have a diverse portfolio of projects available that will translate the shared vision outlined in the Agreement into tangible\, lasting institutional changes in research assessment practices. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey Figures\n\n\n\n\nTotal funding\n€2.33m total funding – €1.22m to be released in the second round.\n\n\nFunding per project\n€ 30\,000 to € 60\,000: a lump sum\, depending on the type of project\n\n\nNumber of projects\nto be funded\n50 overall: 25 projects selected in the first round. Up to 25 projects to be selected for the second round\n\n\nTarget applicants\nLegal entities interested in reforming research assessment practices in their institutions\n\n\n1st call\n26 April – 26 June 2024\n\n\n2nd call\n21 February – 21 April 2025 (closes at 17h CET)\n\n\nDuration of the projects\nImplementation within 12 months after signature of a Third-Party Project Agreement – TPPA\n\n\nStart of the projects\n1 September 2025\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContext of the Call\n\nOver 800 research organisations\, funders\, assessment authorities\, professional societies\, and their associations have agreed on a common direction and principles for reforming the assessment of research\, researchers and research organisations\, outlined in the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment. They have also committed to implement changes within their organisations. \nCoARA\, the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment\, offers a platform for collaboration and mutual learning. However\, given the complexity of the reform process\, providing support for institutions to test\, design\, and carry out in-depth institutional changes is crucial to implement the Agreement commitments. \nThe CoARA Boost project\,funded by the European Union\, strengthens CoARA’s operational capacity. It provides a means to develop a critical mass for reforming research assessment\, to generate gravitas for new members as well as to investigate and implement new models for research assessment. \nThe Cascade Funding Programme within CoARA Boost represents more than half of the project’s overall budget. This programme will support a minimum of 50 organisations in tackling specific challenges related to reforming research assessment and implementing the Agreement commitments. By supporting different types of proposals\, the programme will maintain a balanced portfolio of projects. The cascade funding programme consists of two rounds of open calls\, the first one launched in April 2024 and second one in mid-February 2025. \n\nCascade Funding Second Call Text

SUMMARY:Promoting Open Science at Universities
DESCRIPTION:Insights from the Arqus Open Science Ambassador Network\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDienstag\, 29.04.2025\, 12:30-13:15\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDipl.-Ing. Dr. Hildrun Walter\n\nOpen Science – just the next buzz word or a remarkable development? Open Science (OS) seems to pop up here and there\, often in embellished contexts that suggest a tendency towards arbitrariness. However\, if one looks at the development of the policies of funding agencies\, e.g.\, for the framework programs of the European Commission\, the increase in mandatory deliverables assigned to OS shows a certain relevance of the movement. As a member of the Arqus European University Alliance\, the University of Graz is committed to promoting OS and to coordinating efforts to improve openness within and outside the Alliance. The Arqus Open Science Ambassador Network is dedicated to sharing best practices\, supporting students and researchers in OS practice and leveraging synergies between member universities to advocate for OS. The point is not to fall into ideology\, but to become aware of opportunities and risks by critically reflecting on areas of tension. \nHildrun Walter is researcher in science communication at the University of Graz since 2019. Her research focuses on the evaluation of science communication strategies and formats. She is interested in how open science practices and participatory approaches in research can influence the societal perception of science.

SUMMARY:Data Stewards 2025
DESCRIPTION:Implementing Data Stewards for EU Missions Austria\n\n\n\n\nDie Datenmenge\, die Organisationen zur Verfügung haben\, wächst kontinuierlich.

SUMMARY:Let’s Talk about Science Reform! A Workshop on Theoretical and Methodological Approaches to Investigating the Open Science Movement
DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade the science system has been going through some fundamental changes and even something of a structural reformation. Spearheaded primarily by groups of biomedical scientists\, psychologists and economists\, a reform movement pushing for more openness and verifiability in science has been underway: the Open Science Movement. This movement first started to gain momentum when claims about a credibility crisis were made. Failures of large-scale replication attempts\, seeking to test key studies in some (sub-)disciplines\, worsened initial fears and were quickly treated as proof that fundamental problems did in fact exist and a crisis was indeed unfolding. As a result\, the narrative of a broken science or science in crisis was quickly adopted and promoted across the boundaries of these disciplines. Trans-disciplinary communities began to form\, pushing for systematic interventions to improve the science system overall and to remedy perceived issues of wide-spread irreproducibility as well as a general opacity in science. \nWhile Open Science reforms have garnered quite a bit of positive attention from researchers\, the media\, funders\, and policymakers alike\, they have also received some fundamental criticism over the years. Critics have\, for instance\, pointed to a rather narrow understanding of what constitutes ‘good’ science and how this produces new mechanisms of exclusion rather than inclusion. Similarly\, critics have questioned if the implementations of Open Science measures have in fact benefitted all stakeholders of the global science system as promised. In addition to issues with the assumed universal virtue of Open Science\, critical voices have pointed towards an often abrasive discourse culture associated with the Open Science movement (see “brOpen Science” and “the tone debate”). Hence\, Open Science principles\, their implementations\, and those communities promoting them\, have themselves become the objects of critical scientific inquiry in recent years. \nTo explore these critical debates around Open Science and science reform\, we are bringing together leading scholars who contributed to these debates as part of a one-day in-person workshop in Berlin. Each of our invited speakers will briefly present their own research on the varying aspects of the Open Science reform movement and elaborate on how they theoretically and/or methodologically address the issues they sought to investigate. \nTo start off the workshop\, Sheena F. Bartscherer will present her ongoing investigations into the value systems and narratives underlying the Open Science movement. In her talk\, she will explore the self-perception and public communication of reformers’ activism\, highlighting international replication initiatives and their surrounding community. \nSven Ulpts will proceed with a talk on agreements and discrepancies between researchers’ perspectives and the ideals promoted by Open Science reformers on issues like the practice and role of preregistration\, replication as well as reproducibility. Hence\, in his talk he will explore how current notions of Open Science reform relate to the actual realities and aims of researchers\, who are supposed to live by the standards proposed or even demanded by reformers. \nThis will be followed by Fernanda Beigel who will highlight the social and technical conditions underlying the advancements\, controversies and resistances to Open Science reform in the social sciences and humanities. In particular\, she will compare the ideals of Openness as propagated by current reform movements with implemented forms of Openness in Latin America and the historical conditions as well as developments that such local (indigenous) forms of Openness are contingent on. \nStefanie Haustein will explore the publishing side of Open Science in her talk\, discussing her research on the financial dimensions underlying the actual implementation of Open Science. In particular\, she will speak on open access models and how large academic publishers are able to make an even larger profit with new formats such as APCs. \nAfterwards\, Bart Penders will talk about how current science reform relates to the War on Science. Based on theories of politics of quantification\, he will explore how the Open Science reform movement elevates specific epistemologies to be the guiding principle for all of science and how the roles of statistics\, fraud\, reliability and retractions are used and sometimes even weaponized. \nLastly\, David Peterson will conclude the round of talks by presenting his work on theoretically approaching Metascience as a social movement\, reflecting on how this conceptualization of the Metascience community behind the Open Science reform has been taken up by other researchers  since\, to characterize and investigate Open Science reform. \nWe will wrap up the workshop with an open panel discussion involving all six speakers\, encouraging the audience to participate in a communal discussion and reflection of the day’s proceedings. We intend to find topics as well as perspectives that we – as researchers interested in researching science reform – still need to address. \nThe aim of this event is to provide a forum for the critical reflection of theoretical and methodological approaches to investigate modern science reform and Open Science more specifically. We invite scholars interested in the social and epistemic dimensions of Open Science as well as those curious about studying science reform more broadly\, to attend this workshop. Everyone\, whether critical or enthusiastic about Open Science\, is invited and welcome to join! \nFor registration please send an email directly to Sven Ulpts via: su@ps.au.dk \nDeadline for registrations is Sunday\, April 20th 2025
