DESCRIPTION:Big Data took the world by storm\, Artificial Intelligence has become a hot topic across research disciplines. Working with these data can be a challenge. Especially for researchers in Business\, Economics and Social Sciences\, who graduated just a few years ago when most study programs covered mainly or exclusively ‘traditional’ data collection methods such as surveys with structured\, tabular data. To unlock the research potential of new data sources by applying fitting methods\, education is needed. The BERD Academy is the training outlet of the consortium for Business\, Economics\, and Related Data in the National Research Data Infrastructure (BERD@NFDI). In this talk\, we will present how a wide range of offers in flexible formats fulfills the needs of researchers and research data providers. We want to discuss\, how educational content can unlock research potential and how open education can foster open science.

DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEVERSE is running an interactive online workshop which aims to examine which tools and services researchers use to improve the quality of research software\, and how they use them. The workshop is titled “Evaluating Tools and Services to improve the quality of research software” and will take place on Monday 10 February 2025 between 10:00 and 16:00 CET. \nThe workshop is open to those who work with or develop research software and want to uphold high-quality standards regarding FAIRness\, sustainability\, portability\, testing\, security\, etc. Both non-EVERSE and EVERSE members are welcome. Members belonging to any of the 5 EOSC Science Clusters are also encouraged to take part. \nThe workshop will provide opportunities for knowledge exchange and discussion on relevant tools used to improve the quality of research software. DESCRIPTION:The Offer\nA Collaborative Path to the Digital Era\n\nSelected applications will be granted sponsored access and use of EGI services and resources. EGI offers compute and storage resources\, compute platform services\, data management services\, and related user support and training through this call. The resources and services offered via this grant are sponsored by various national funding agencies and are free to access for the use cases selected through the call. Please note that we cannot provide access to specific data sets through this Call. \nSelection and Results\n\nEGI supports the integration of new scientific use case applications in the EGI Federated Infrastructure under the following new conditions: \n\nProposals for scientific use cases will go through a review by independent experts from the EGI Federation. As part of this review\, the main objectives\, the overall level of maturity and feasibility of the use case will be evaluated. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the evaluation within three weeks from the submission date.\nIf the outcome is positive\, EGI will run a match-making process aiming to identify the most suitable service providers and allocate the required resources. These resources can be national or international\, depending on the coverage of the request and its expected impact.\nExperts from EGI will monitor the integration plans of the use case regularly\, providing assistance and support to address technical issues and disseminate outstanding results.\n\nTimeline\n\nSubmissions of scientific use cases can be made at any time. \nTypically\, evaluations and notifications are expected within one month from the submission. März spricht Host Kasra Seirafi von Fluxguide über digitale Vermittlungsstrategien und gibt Einblicke in das Horizon Europe Cluster 2-Projekt MEMORISE. DESCRIPTION:The European Union Prize for Citizen Science recognizes outstanding achievements in the advancement of knowledge through the empowerment of civil society for the development of the future. \nThe Prize honors Citizen Science Initiatives in the European Research Area that enact change\, expand knowledge\, and demonstrate innovative Open Science processes that rethink existing practices while addressing social\, cultural\, environmental\, educational\, and political advancement. \nCitizen Science is demonstrated by “general public engagement in scientific research activities when citizens actively contribute to science either with their intellectual effort or surrounding knowledge\, or with their tools and resources” (European Commission\, 2014). \nThe Prize invites submissions from a diverse range of initiatives that demonstrate outstanding examples of both citizens engaging with science and research\, and scientists and researchers engaging with society. An initiative could consist of a project\, a series of projects\, an activity\, or series of activities.

DESCRIPTION:Next online event coming up on\n\nMore traditional\, publication-driven assessments of research(ers) are running out of steam. Multiple initiatives are promoting responsible assessments of research and researchers. Simultaneously\, a movement that incentivises open scientific practices is developing and gaining footing on European and national levels. These two movements have a unique opportunity to strengthen and reinforce one another. Research assessment reform can provide a big boost to the adoption of Open Science\, and the transparency offered by Open Science can serve as a key enabler for assessment reform. \nIn bimonthly sessions\, facilitated by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University (NL)\, we ask: How can research assessment consider Open Science and vice versa? What does Open Science translate to in research practice? \n\n\n\n12 March 2025\, 10:00-11:30 CET\n\n\nExploring the role of context in Responsible Research Assessment\nThis Community of Practice (CoP) session is inspired by the diverse research assessment approaches observed across the nine GraspOS pilots. Initially\, we classified these pilots by type to facilitate mutual learning. However\, we soon realised that the classifications offered little practical value. In this session\, a diverse panel of stakeholders will explore the significance of context in assessment reform and its broader implications. SUMMARY:Building the EOSC Federation: Kick-off workshop for the build-up phase of the EOSC Federation
DESCRIPTION:The EOSC EU Node will take part in the upcoming Kick-off Workshop for the build-up phase of the EOSC Federation\, organised by the EOSC Tripartite Governance under the auspices of DG RTD\, on 17-18 March 2025 in Brussels\, Belgium. This event will bring together representatives from 12 invited organisations and one consortium\, the European Commission with the EOSC EU Node contractors\, and the EOSC Association to shape the early phase of the EOSC Federation build-up. \nAs the first reference node in the unfolding EOSC Federation\, the EOSC EU Node implements core federating capabilities and provides horizontal infrastructure and application services to support cross-node scientific workflows. The workshop will create a unique opportunity to present the EOSC EU Node’s technical architecture and solutions to the other node candidates and actively contribute to discussions on the key aspects of the early federation building exercise\, ensuring alignment with the common interests of all involved organisations and other stakeholders of the EOSC ecosystem. \nThe workshop agenda will focus on: \n\nPlanning the main activities of the build-up phase based on draft project proposals of the node candidates.\nDefining the organisational modalities for effective collaboration.\n\nEOSC EU Node representatives will contribute to discussions across\nmultiple highly relevant topics: \n\n\nIdentity and resource management\nHow can we ensure seamless authentication and authorisation (AAI) across the EOSC Federation? DESCRIPTION:Inhalt\nDieses Webinar gibt einen Praxiseinblick\, wie Forschende mit den Daten des AMDCs arbeiten. Hier die Abstracts der Vorträge: \nVorstellung AMDC (Marie Beindl – AMDC):\nDas Austrian Micro Data Center (AMDC) bietet seit seinem Start im Sommer 2022 die Möglichkeit zur Beforschung von verlinkbaren Mikrodaten. Forscher:innen von wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen können im Zuge eines konkreten Forschungsvorhabens Zugang zu Registerdaten und Daten der öffentlichen Verwaltung bekommen. Durch den Remote Zugriff auf einen virtuellen Desktop und sorgfältige datenschutzrechtliche Prüfungen der Ergebnisse kann ein sicheres Arbeiten mit diesen Daten gewährleistet werden. Die Forschung mit Mikrodaten bietet innovative Potentiale für die Wissenschaft\, vor allem durch die Verknüpfung verschiedener Datenquellen. \nVersorgungsplanung im öffentlichen Verkehr? So geht’s mit Personendaten aus dem AMDC (Tadej Brezina – TU Wien):\nOffizielle Pläne wie z.B. der österreichische Mobilitätsmasterplan 2030 sehen eine massive Veränderung des Mobilitätsverhaltens vor\, um eine Verringerung des Klimawandels und die Anpassung an seine verbleibenden Auswirkungen zu erreichen. Dafür ist auch eine Planung verbesserter Dienstleistungen des öffentlichen Verkehrs zu Wohn- und Arbeitsorten notwendig. Die Verknüpfung von räumlichen Wohn- und Arbeitsortdaten auf Mikroebene mit den Daten der räumlichen ÖV-Versorgung (ÖV-Güteklassen) liefert einen Einblick darin\, wie gut Menschen an unterschiedlichen Orten versorgt sind – oder auch nicht\, wenn sie außerhalb der ÖV-Güteklassen wohnen und/oder arbeiten. \nEpidemiologische Analysen mit verknüpften Registerdaten: Erkenntnisse aus mehreren AMDC Forschungsprojekten (Erwin Stolz – Med Uni Graz):\nUmfassende Daten\, die die ganze Bevölkerung eines Landes abbilden stellen eine wichtige Voraussetzung für hochwertige Forschung in den Sozialwissenschaften aber auch der Epidemiologie dar. Die Ergebnisse solcher Forschung kann einen Mehrwert für die Gesellschaft leisten und stärkt gleichzeitig den Forschungsstandort im internationalen Vergleich. Seit einiger Zeit ist es im Rahmen des Austrian Micro Data Center (AMDC) für Forscher*innen möglich\, auch auf Daten der öffentlichen Register in Österreich zuzugreifen bzw. diese miteinander zu verknüpfen. Im Rahmen dieses Webinars stellt Prof. Erwin Stolz einige wissenschaftliche AMDC Projekte vor und berichtet praktische Erfahrungen aus der Registerdatenforschung. \nAnalyse des Arbeitskräftemangels mit Daten des AMDCs (Bettina Stadler – Uni Graz):\nDer Arbeits- und Facharbeitskräftemangel wird in Österreich vielfach diskutiert. Obwohl es im Laufe des letzten Jahres in einigen Bereichen zu einer leichten Entspannung gekommen ist\, haben viele Unternehmen nach wie vor große Probleme Mitarbeiter:innen zu finden. Mit Hilfe der Daten der Offenen-Stellen-Erhebung von Statistik Austria wird für den Zeitraum 2014 bis 2023 die Nachfrage von Unternehmen nach Arbeitskräften im Detail analysiert. Anschließend werden die Ergebnisse mit aus dem Labour Force Survey abgeleiteten Qualitätsindikatoren zusammengeführt. Die Daten der Offenen-Stellen Erhebung von Statistik Austria beruhen auf einer laufenden Stichprobe von Unternehmen und erfassen damit die Breite der offenen Stellen wesentlich besser als die Meldungen beim Arbeitsmarktservice. \nBridging Inequality in Distance and Gender: Commuting and Child Penalty in the Austrian Labor Market (Tobias Eibinger\, Riccarda Rosenball – Uni Graz):\nDie sogenannte „Child Penalty“ – die Verringerung von Einkommen und Karrieremöglichkeiten\, die Frauen nach der Geburt eines Kindes erfahren – bleibt eine zentrale Ursache für Geschlechterungleichheit. Dieses Projekt konzentriert sich auf die geschlechtsspezifische Pendellücke\, eine bisher wenig erforschte Dimension der „Child Penalty“. Mütter verkürzen nach der Geburt häufig ihre Pendeldistanzen\, um Kinderbetreuung und Erwerbsarbeit besser vereinbaren zu können. Dies führt oft zu beruflichen Anpassungen\, die langfristige Auswirkungen auf ihre Löhne und Karriereaussichten haben. Wir analysieren die Auswirkungen der Geburt eines Kindes auf das Pendelverhalten von Paaren\, untersuchen die beruflichen Anpassungen\, die Frauen vornehmen\, um kürzere Pendelwege zu erreichen\, und deren Auswirkungen auf die Löhne. SUMMARY:Open FDO Workshop: The EPOS Research Infrastructure – Practical Challenges in Creating an Integrated Dataspace
DESCRIPTION:The FDO Forum is happy that Daniele Bailo and Jan Michalák from the EPOS ERIC Research Infrastructure will share their experiences in building a European wide infrastructure that amongst others is working on creating an integrated dataspace for researchers in the field of solid earth science and discuss with us about future perspectives of data infrastructure development. \nMotivation\nThe FDO Forum (FDOF) has as the major topic to develop the FDO specifications and foster their implementation to help enabling the creation of a unified and joint dataspace which should facilitate data sharing and reuse to the benefits of the researchers. Taking a naïve viewpoint\, one would assume that for people responsible for the building of “research or data infrastructures (RDI)” FDOs would immediately be welcomed as the standard that would solve all integration problems. Of course\, this is not the case. Not surprisingly\, the many technological challenges that need to be overcome to stepwise improve data accessibility and reuse bind much person power and require long-term agendas\, so that the responsible persons are very careful in jumping on new “technology waves”. Architecture designs which account for the FDO and that are enough general and abstract to allow the RDI implementation in different scenarios\, are required. This endeavour has been pursued in research infrastructures such as EPOS\, which are highly distributed\, with many partners all over Europe and beyond\, all of them having their individual technology stack\, policies and processes\, requiring a lot of synchronisation effort to make new steps. In addition\, the available funds for RDI and thus the availability of technological experts are limited. \nEPOS is an excellent example to understand the challenges in improving data sharing and reuse in detail. Therefore\, this workshop is a very good opportunity to understand the practical challenges and the architectural approach in research infrastructure building and the achieved results in detail on the one hand\, and discuss possible future developments on the other hand.

Sie birgt aber auch Herausforderungen: Diese können technischer und organisatorischer Natur sein (Entwicklung\, Finanzierung und Governance von Plattformen\, Software o.Ä.) oder in verschiedenen Auffassungen einer bestmöglichen Nutzung und Verbreitung wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse liegen. SUMMARY:Introducing OSTrails: Your Companion to Streamline Planning\, Tracking\, and Assessing Research Practices
DESCRIPTION:This session is an introduction to the OSTrails project\, aimed at informing the broader research community of its main objectives and preliminary results\, and involving them in the co-creation of its foundational Plan-Track-Assess (PTA) Framework. \nLimited interoperability across the research stages\, inconsistent practices between Research Data Management (RDM) services and varying Open Science maturing levels across countries and scientific domains\, hinder collaboration and scientific progress. OSTrails addresses this challenge by creating a collection of open\, reusable\, and adaptable resources that collectively enable seamless information exchange among Data Management Planning (DMP) Platforms\, Scientific Knowledge Graphs (SKGs) and FAIR Assessment Tools. This approach empowers research communities to mor effectively manage\, share\, and evaluate their outputs research. \nIn this webinar\, Elli Papadopoulou from ARC (Deputy Project Coordinator) will introduce how the PTA Framework is defined and used within the project\, to enable interoperability\, connectivity and machine actionability. \nTwo of the 24 OSTrails pilot initiatives will be featured to demonstrate how project solutions are being co-created and implemented in national and domain-specific settings. \n\nAndrew Hoffman (Leiden University) and Eileen Waegemaekers (SURF) will showcase the Dutch National Pilot\, highlighting how dynamic\, workflow-integrated DMPs support collaboration and knowledge sharing across institutions.\n\n\nRenaud Duyme (ESRF)\, representing PaNoSC\, will present a use case\, illustrating the use of DMPs\, SKGs\, and FAIR evaluation for datasets from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.\n\nThe webinar marks also the launch of our OSTrails Mentorship Programme\, presented by Pedro Principe (UMinho).
