SUMMARY:Blue-Cloud first federation workshop
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Overview\nThe Blue-Cloud Horizon Europe project is introducing a federated model where Blue research infrastructures (RIs) and other data and service infrastructures and technological providers make their services available to the community via agreed\, FAIR formats and technology that the Open Science Community in Europe (under the umbrella of EOSC) recommends or accepts. \nThe Blue-Cloud collaborative environment allows researchers to retrieve marine data\, exploit them in the VRE\, access distributed cloud resources\, exploit analytical services and interdisciplinary Virtual Labs. Blue-Cloud is offering e-infrastructure services (computing\, storage\, analytics\, SSO\, AAI\, generic service)\, a data discovery service (10M+ datasets and products from European marine infrastructures such as EMODnet\, SeaDataNet\, Copernicus\, Ecotaxa and others)\, and research-intensive virtual labs\, embedded in a Virtual Research Environment open to any users with federated identity to the marine research community in Europe (and beyond). \nIn this workshop\, we aim at assessing Blue-Cloud federated services towards the needs and challenges of other research infrastructures active in marine and climate research\, ultimately stimulating a debate around the impact of open science federation in practice. \nWho is this workshop for\nThe Blue-Cloud first federation workshop is by invitation. DESCRIPTION:The Blue-Cloud 2026 team is gathering for its 4th General Assembly (GA) meeting and Technical and Scientific Committee (TSC) meeting\, which takes place at the Instituto Hidrográfico in Lisbon\, Portugal\, from 5 to 8 November 2024. This meeting offers the consortium a valuable opportunity to reflect on the progress made over the first two years of the project and to plan the upcoming activities necessary for the successful implementation of Blue-Cloud. \nAs part of the event\, the Blue-Cloud team also hosts the 1st Federation Workshop. The workshop aims to evaluate Blue-Cloud’s federated services in relation to the needs and challenges of other marine and climate research infrastructures. DESCRIPTION:The EUMETSAT Marine User Days will bring together existing and prospective users from across the diverse marine user community. Focusing on the data provided by the European organisations involved in the Copernicus programme and their role in oceanography and marine applications\, the event will act as a showcase for use cases. It is also a networking opportunity for users across the value chain\, and will feature a workshop to engage with user needs and feedback. \nEmphasis will be placed on data from across the value chain including satellite data\, derived products\, climate data records and their applications. Copernicus contributing mission data from EUMETSAT’s meteorological missions and data from the satellite application facility specialising in ocean and sea ice will broaden the scope. \nThe Marine User Days will be open to participation from across the community including those involved at the policy and governance level\, academia and research and commercial entities.  Attendees will benefit from the opportunity to present their use cases to the wider community of users and potential customers\, but also to the European Commission and Copernicus entrusted entity representatives. They will have to opportunity to discuss their use cases and needs with the latter.

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to share with you the draft of the first three chapters of the EOSC Federation Handbook. \nThe writing of the text has been coordinated by the EOSC Association and supported by the EOSC Focus project\, following the task assigned by the Tripartite Group (a sub-group of the EOSC Partnership’s Tripartite Governance) to draft “a single reference document describing the EOSC Federation\, its operational structure and responsibilities\, its legal and governance framework\, and its technical operations”. \nThe first version of the EOSC Federation Handbook covers the build-up phase of the Federation in 2025 and 2026. The first three chapters describe the purpose\, initial governance and organisational structure of the Federation. \nAlso in preparation\, but not yet completed\, are chapters 4\, 5 and 6\, to be developed and released for consultation in the coming months. These chapters will address operational aspects\, services and policies of the EOSC Federation\, and the chapter outlines are included in the present consultation. \nOnce completed\, the first iteration of the Handbook will serve as a guide for the initial implementation of EOSC Nodes and the Federation as a whole. \nThe deadline to provide feedback on the first three chapters of the EOSC Federation Handbook is 31 October 2024 (23:59 CET).

DESCRIPTION:The call for candidates for four EOSC-A Board of Director positions has been launched for the 2024 elections\, which will take place during the 9th General Assembly of the EOSC Association. GA#9 is an online meeting to be held 22 November 2024. The terms of three EOSC-A Directors are concluding (with one of these eligible to stand for re-election)\, and a fourth vacancy has arisen prematurely due to the December 2023 passing of Director Sarah Jones. Sarah’s position will initially be filled on a one-year interim basis. \nMembers interested in potentially serving on the Board for either four years (one + three) or six years (three + three) are encouraged to apply for both the three-year and one-year term options. Currently there is a need for Directors with specific skills\, including political insight\, policy expertise\, and relevant technological know-how\, which would best serve to continue the ongoing work of the Board. NFDI is the mandated organisation for Germany in the EOSC Association and is a partner at the EOSC Symposium. \nNFDI would like to use this opportunity for exchange in Germany and is therefore organising a side event together with EOSC on October 23-24\, 2024. \nThe objective of the side event is to demonstrate the intertwined developments and communities of NFDI and EOSC. SUMMARY:National Open Science Festival 2024 at Maastricht University
DESCRIPTION:Maastricht University (UM) will be the venue for the National Open Science Festival on 22 October 2024 at the School of Business and Economics (SBE). Since the founding of Open Science NL\, it has taken over the organisation of the festival and made an annual budget available for it. However\, the National Open Science Festival is truly a festival for and by the community. The organising committee of the 2024 edition comprises staff from UM\, Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS)\, National Coordination Point Research Data Management (LCRDM) and Open Science NL. Additionally\, a programme committee reflecting the broad Open Science community is currently being formed. Read more about this event on the website of Open Science NL. \nRegistration\nThe opening of registration will be announced via the Open Science NL website and newsletter\, as well as via DANS\, LCRDM\, UM and OSCNL. Furthermore\, the National Open Science Festival will once again feature its own website\, offering people the opportunity to sign up as presenters for programme components or register as visitors. \nThe importance of Open Science at UM\nThe aim of Open Science is to strengthen collaboration\, both among individual researchers and between other parties and scientists. Open Science makes research more transparent\, controllable\, faster\, more efficient\, reproducible and more sustainable. The idea is that civil society organisations\, patient organisations\, companies and other organisations can all benefit from easy access to scientific research. DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce that the EOSC Symposium 2024 will be held 21-23 October 2024\, in Berlin. The EOSC Symposium 2024 will be a critical event on the path to EOSC post-2027\, and will build on the success and momentum established by the 2023 event\, while also expanding the potential for on-site participation. \nEOSC Symposium 2024 will take place under the patronage of the German Minister for Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger. The event is being organised in coordination with the EOSC-A German Mandated Organisation\, NFDI\, and the Leibniz Information Centre for Economics (ZBW)\, an EOSC-A Member. \nIn order to capitalise on the synergies between the EOSC and NFDI communities\, NFDI will hold a meeting with representatives of its 26 consortia back-to-back to the EOSC Symposium in order to trigger collaboration between the target groups.

DESCRIPTION:Wissenschaftliche Zeitschriftenverlage haben in den vergangenen Jahren begonnen\, Richtlinien für den Umgang mit den einer Publikation zugrundeliegenden Forschungsdaten zu verfassen. Derartige Datenrichtlinien und Empfehlungen zum Umgang mit Forschungsdaten haben für Forschende zunehmend an Relevanz gewonnen\, da sie im Rahmen des Forschungs- bzw. Publikationsprozesses berücksichtigt werden müssen. Um Forschende im Hinblick auf die Umsetzung der in den Datenrichtlinien formulierten Anforderungen beraten zu können\, haben wir mehr als 80 internationale wissenschaftliche Fachzeitschriften ausgewertet. Diese Zeitschriften stellen die Top-Publikationsorgane der an der WU vertretenen sozial- und wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Forschungsschwerpunkte dar und werden zu Prämierungszwecken herangezogen. SUMMARY:EOSC EU Node technical launch event
DESCRIPTION:The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) and Directorate-General for Communications Networks\, Content and Technology (DG CNECT) are organising a technical launch event of the EOSC EU Node online on 10 October 2024 at 9.30 – 13.15 CEST. \nSupporting the EU’s Policy of Open Science\, the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to give the EU a global lead in research data management and ensure that scientists in Europe enjoy the full benefits of data-driven science. To foster the development of EOSC\, the European Commission has deployed into production the EOSC EU Node in the form of managed services provided by third-party contractors. \nThe online launch event will focus on a technical demonstration of the EOSC EU Node\, provided by the contractors at first hand\, who are also responsible for the operations\, maintenance and support of the services. \nA panel on the buildup of the EOSC Federation will reflect on the importance of this milestone\, its impact on the future development of EOSC\, on the buildup of the EOSC Federation and on the broader adoption of Open Science principles. The moderated panel discussion will feature representatives from the EOSC Association and its Board of Directors\, EOSC Steering Board\, the European Commission\, the contractors providing the EOSC EU Node and the research community.

DESCRIPTION:Hosted by HUB Ocean\, Microsoft and Accenture on October 10th\, the Ocean Data Action Day will provide insights into the invaluable role of industrial ocean data sharing in promoting ocean health and sustainable management. Sharing this data bridges knowledge gaps\, benefiting both the environment and ocean-dependent industries. \nUnder the auspices of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy\, these organizations spearhead the coalition\, contributing to the Ocean Panel’s goal of achieving a 100% sustainably managed ocean. Unlocking industrial ocean data is a specific goal for ODAC\, as it is for the UN Ocean Decade’s Corporate Data Group\, of which HUB Ocean is also a key member. \nModerated by David Eades\, broadcaster and journalist\, the event will feature leaders from industry\, science and regulatory\, and offer a 360° perspective on the significance of industrial ocean data sharing. HUB Ocean will introduce their report\, Tides of Transparency: A First Mapping of Industrial Ocean Data Sharing\, including insights\, use cases and guidelines explaining why and how private industry can make their ocean data publicly accessible\, empowering all joining to contribute to the sustainable management of the ocean. \nBlue-Cloud 2026 at the event\nBlue-Cloud 2026 will be represented by Dick Shaap (MARIS)\, Technical Coordinator of Blue-Cloud\, who will be giving a presentation at 10:20 CEST on Enriching Open Ocean Data Repositories with Industrial Data.  \nRegister here
