ERCIM News No. 144

The Special Theme and the Research and Innovation sections contain articles presenting a panorama of European research activities. The Special Theme focuses on a sector that has been selected by the editors from a short list of currently “hot” topics whereas the Research and Innovation section contains articles describing scientific activities, research results, and technical transfer endeavours in any sector of Information and Communication Science and Technology (ICST), telecommunications or applied mathematics. Submissions to the Special Theme section are subjected to an external review process coordinated by invited guest editors whereas submissions to the Research and Innovation section are checked and approved by the ERCIM News editorial board.
Special Theme: Open Science Experiences and Prospects

Open Science is the practice of science in which researchers collaborate openly and citizens contribute to research questions. In this approach, research artefacts, research processes, and even laboratories are shared under conditions that enable reuse, transparency, and reproducibility as early and openly as possible. The European Commission has made Open Science a policy priority.
This special theme aims to highlight current technological developments in Open Science and to present future prospects for infrastructures, tools, and services that support open, transparent, and reusable research practices.

- Citizen science platforms, methods and impact
- Ethical, legal and trust aspects of Open Science (e.g. GDPR, IP, sensitive data)

- Methods and tools for science reproducibility and transparency
- Open research software, open-source practices, and research software sustainability
- Open science-friendly scholarly communication

- Services for Open Science education and skills development
- Socio-economic and geopolitical dimensions of Open Science
- Solutions for Open Science monitoring and innovative research assessment.
